I sold a SharpMaker yesterday.

I work on a Naval Base here on Sydney Harbour where our small fleet of Minehunters are based. On these particular vessels and I think RAN wide it is a prerequisite that sailors carry a torch, cyalume light stick and a knife when on board or at least at sea, so knives are pretty popular with many of the sailors.

One of the young sailors in particular is a bit of a knife knut though not like the majority here and he carries an Esee 3 which he freehand sharpens very neatly but not as sharp as it could be and I often rib him over it and tell him I’d sharpen it for him but I’m worried he’d cut himself.

The day before yesterday he accosted me before lunch to show me how well he’d sharpened his knife the night before. It was sharper than when I’d last seen it but it barely cut a post-it note. I gave him the usual light hearted ribbing and told him he’d be better off getting his girlfriend to sharpen it but if he bought me lunch for a month I’d sharpen it for him tomorrow.

Long story short I took my SharpMaker to work the following day and after lunch set up on a bench in the store with the medium stones at 40deg and within a couple of minutes his knife was push cutting newsprint cleanly. The look on his face and his surprise was as satisfying as it gets for me. He truly was thrilled, asked me many questions compared my S30V Millie to the Esee cutting newsprint and wanted to know the best place to buy his own SharpMaker. We had a look at a few places and he ordered there and then his very own from Knife Centre.

Bloke, You sold more than a Sharpmaker, you opened a man his horizont and made him happy for the rest of his life. Well done! Life could be so easy ... :)

Great story. His Esee is a great knife, but any knife is pretty worthless if it is dull. You have opened up a whole new world for him. Next we will probably see him on YouTube teaching sharpening techniques.

Sal, as per usual, laying out the truth. This is a great quote that should be a bumpersticker or one of those motivational posters (that I think I just might make one up).

A great product like Spyderco's 204 Sharpmaker will indeed sell itself when you are allowed to show the buyer what is in front of him/her. I still meet so many people in the course of a month that have never heard of Spyderco  Here where I live in Kansas City, Missouri USA Earth they all seem to be sold on Buck, Ka-Bar, Case and I meet a few folks who have Kershaw knives. But it's very rare when I run into a fellow Spyderhead here in KC. This town goes to Walmart and Amazon like a bunch of pre-programmed herd animals.

But the three people I've got to check out my Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker as of now 2 of the 3 of them have purchased the unit. We do have 2 retail establishments here in KC that do sell the Sharpmaker. But unfortunately both places don't have any Spyderco knives for sale

Yeah BLOKE you literally have to put it in their face to get their attention>>> I couldn't agree with you more ;)
