Hap40 Question
Hap40 Question
I received a Hap40 Delica Wharnie with a fairly wonky lamination line on one side. This will be a user and I don’t obsess over perfectly pretty lamination lines, but it makes me ask: if one were to sharpen all the way to or past the lamination line, is there Hap40 at the core throughout the entire width of the blade? Or is it a partial sandwich, more like a taco? Is the line the end of the Hap40?
Even where the line is closer than I’d like to the edge, there is likely decades worth (or a lifetime) of sharpening in there. Just curious.

Re: Hap40 Question
If you look at the spine of the knife, esp after some patina forms, you'll see the sandwiched HAP40 goes through the entire blade.

Re: Hap40 Question
Btw, I can see the layers of mine without waiting on a patina just due to the steels' natural colors, so you should be able to as well in the right lighting.

Re: Hap40 Question
It's a sandwich, not a taco. :)

Re: Hap40 Question
it’s actually called a “warikomi” Which is what a samurai sword or a katana has which cold steel called a San Mai and ridiculously tried to patent the name which is part of an eastern vocabulary for layered construction and then tried to sue a company for patent infringement which got laughed out if court. Warikomi steels are fantastic composited metals that you get extremely strong due to their ability to get the best of both with softer out steels holding a protecting the harder denser steel inside protecting it from rust and the elements whilst offering added flexibility and but also rigidity kind of like an English long bow or a Mongolian bow. I haven’t seen a warikomi style knife from Spyderco that does not of the steel going all the way through.mb1 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 15, 2018 11:57 amI received a Hap40 Delica Wharnie with a fairly wonky lamination line on one side. Re: Hap40 Question
Hap40 isn't very reactive, SB and V2 will patina and rust faster
Re: Hap40 Question

Re: Hap40 Question
Haha not sure you will unless you force one, I've been using my Sukenari in the kitchen, I've abused it and left it unwiped after cutting acidic foods which will leave orange rust on carbon steel knives.mb1 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 15, 2018 4:31 pmYeah thx Shawn. Hap40? Nothing. I used Ferric chloride to show you the laminate at the spine
Re: Hap40 Question
The HAP40 Stretch I gifted to a friend gets carried on Spartan races, so it has to deal with sweat, mud, rain etc. It hasn't shown any darkening, but did get some minor pitting on the HAP portion of the blade. None of my HAP40 blades show any signs of corrosion at all.Deadboxhero wrote: ↑Fri Jun 15, 2018 4:36 pmHaha not sure you will unless you force one, I've been using my Sukenari in the kitchen, I've abused it and left it unwiped after cutting acidic foods which will leave orange rust on carbon steel knives.mb1 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 15, 2018 4:31 pmYeah thx Shawn. I cut a lemon with my hap delica when I first got it. Gave the blade a slight rinse and wipe, only turned light grey. Im curious how the Rex will compare.

Re: Hap40 Question
Just sent my Hap Delica back for warranty replacement. Steel defect below the lamination line resulting in a corrosion spot. Light blade use with limited exposure to water
Re: Hap40 Question
You do realize that HAP40 is a tool steel right?Accutronman wrote: ↑Sat Jun 16, 2018 7:07 pmJust sent my Hap Delica back for warranty replacement. Steel defect below the lamination line resulting in a corrosion spot. Light blade use with limited exposure to water

Do you have a picture you could post? When you say steel defect could you be more specific?Accutronman wrote: ↑Sat Jun 16, 2018 7:07 pmJust sent my Hap Delica back for warranty replacement. Re: Hap40 Question
So one could re profile a HAP 40 blade and remove the entire stainless layer?
Or say a SB blade.
Or say a SB blade.
On my radar: 110V Military, Police 4 and some sweet Rex 45 Military action.

Re: Hap40 Question
That would be a re-grind, not a re-profile.HarleyXJGuy wrote: ↑Sat Jun 16, 2018 10:51 pmSo one could re profile a HAP 40 blade and remove the entire stainless layer?

Maybe. It would depend on the thickness of the layers. Might have to grind off too much to only have the core.

Re: Hap40 Question
I think the blade would be rather thin.
