Please help me fix my urban pivot

Hi!

I took my K390 Urban apart to oil the pivot and somehow when I was putting it back together I screwed the screw into the pivot and it went in but not quite all the way, and now I can't get it back out or make it go in any farther. When I try to unscrew it the backing that I screwed the screw into spins with it. I tried taping the back and that didn't work. I'm not really sure what to do. It's currently too loose to use safely.

I hope the above explanation made sense. Any ideas for how to remove it to rescrew it in would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you may have cross threaded it or it may have bottomed out on old dry thread locker.

You might like to try laying the knife on a bit of firm rubber at the pivot pin give it a few taps on the end of your torx driver and use plenty of downward force and try unscrewing it that way. Hopefully it will bite into the rubber and come undone. If it spins on the rubber scratch up the pivot pin face with 600grit wet and dry or similar to give it a key and try again.

A drop of Kroil or similar won’t hurt either but make sure the pivot head is bone dry on the rubber.

Recently sent in my K390 Urban to Spyderco because my pivot was spinning. They said they don't have any more of those grey scales and sent it back. Wouldn't waste your postage sending it in.

Thanks for the ideas. I tried what you said with the rubber. I laid it in one of those rubber can twister aids, hit the back of the torx driver a few times and cranked it down hard. No luck.

I will try a stronger tape. If that doesn't work maybe I will have to glue it to something. I will try the sandpaper as well. I don't currently have any so I will go and buy some.

That's a shame. I wonder if that means they would've had to destroy the scales to fix it? I also wonder if they would replace it with regular black scales.

Did you happen to strip the "D" in the scale's pivot-hole that is supposed to keep the flat-edged Chicago screw from spinning?

Seems to me this spinning problem needs a better answer than no spare scales.

Loose tolerances, but, hey, I can imagine a wearing down of the scale with each pivot adjustment, then what?

Yeah it was pretty disappointed but I stopped myself from creating a post about it. At least offer black scales or something? I wish there was a good way to put a screw head on the hardware I would be ok with that. I've been considering putting in a flat head slot but don't really wanna mess up the scales. I guess I just accepted my loss since I got the knife on the forums like this.

Here's another option:

The "D" shaped liners are very difficult to reproduce when making aftermarket scales for these FRN knives. (The internal spacers and standoffs also present their own challenges to replicate) I was able to do it with some very delicate chisel work on one set of wood scales - but gave up after that. When I assemble a set of wood replacements for an FRN Spydie - I cheat. I take a small dowel and some CA glue and glue the dowel to the smooth head of the D-bolt. This allows me to keep the D-bolt from turning while tightening the screw. Once everything is snugged up, the dowel and glue pops right off.

Several aftermarket scale makers are able to do "D" shaped holes. I'd expect that the scales made by Cuscadi will have the correct dimensions. An expensive option, but the K390 Urban is a deserving recipient for spiffy aftermarket scales. :D

Thank you Foofie. I think gluing something to the pivot is definitely gonna be my next attempt. I've been thinking it'd be great to get micarta scales for the urban, but the ones by Cuscadi cost much more than the knife itself so I've been hesitant. I love the blade on this thing. I'm a novice sharpener (with a KME) and I got this knife sharper than any I've tried before or since. It stays sharp too!

My knife has a flat spot on the blade due to hitting the back spacer. I need to get that fixed before putting it back together I guess since I likely won't be able to easily get it apart/back together again.

I'll post a solution if I'm able to find one. Please feel free to post any more ideas if you have them!!!

Given the slippage in my never-disassembled Urban, and wanting to avoid SuperGlue, dowels, and such, I perused the Cuscadi site and, lo and behold, discovered an Urban with nice CF scales.

What was really important though is that their Urban has a pivot screw with a Torx head on each side.

I'm thinking this arrangement would solve the spinning issue once-and-for-all as it doesn't depend on the state of the "D" in the scale.

On finding a suitable replacement pivot, DIYers might need to drill out the feeble "D".

It would be nice if W&R offered this replacement and drilling. Not doing so leaves some of us with a sub-standard Spydie.

Let me know if you find a suitable replacement pivot. My K390 had only seen very minimal light use when I noticed the blade moves side-to-side when open. Turning the pivot screw does nothing as the whole assembly just spins. The knife still works fine since I'm pretty much holding the blade when cutting something but it bothers the OCD in me. :)

I got a quote from cuscadi for 65 Euros for micarta scales, which would make the Urban super classy.

I thought Cuscadi would be a source given that they sell custom-scaled Urbans. The scales on their example are affixed with opposing Torx heads.

But, for my new scales (70€ delivered), Lucas has offered me both teflon washers and a Chicago screw like the ones we have.

I'm going to trust in Cuscadi that they have solved the spin problem. I may get burned. I'll blame OCD if I do.

I haven't had the problem with my S110V UKPK but I also haven't had any need to mess with the pivot. I don't recall anyone complaining about this issue with any of the other models. I have seen several complaints about the FRN Urban, specifically the K390.

I am glad I have not had any problems with mine. It gets used a lot and I have had no issues. I hope I don't, but if I do, I will have to get some new scales, but I really like the grey ones it has now.
