Chaparral sharpening
Chaparral sharpening
Hey folks! About to use my sharpmaker for the first time on my Chaparral. Just to sharpen do I use 40 deg or 30 deg. With it being so thin behind the edge I’m not sure.

I recommend you watch the Sharpmaker video..that will help.
Overheard at the end of the ice age, “We’ve been having such unnatural weather.”

Yes. Your Chaparral probably shipped with an angle between 30 and 40. So if you opt to take it down to 30 (and I recommend that you do!), you'll want to have a Sharpie close to hand and some free time.MichaelScott wrote: ↑Sun May 20, 2018 10:24 amI recommend you watch the Sharpmaker video..that will help.

Yup, to reach 30* in a new Spyderco could potentially prove to be a quite involved task. The more grinding the more attention needed to keeping the point from rounding.
Re: Chaparral sharpening
I haven't reprofiled either of my Chaparrals to 30 dps yet. I just keep touching up the factory bevels on the 40° setting and they're doing pretty well. It's probably about time to go ahead and reprofile the CF Chap since I've had it awhile.
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!
Re: Chaparral sharpening
I maintain my Chaparral by occasional maintenance sharpening at 40°and stropping in between. The primary and secondary bevel angles should be independent of both the blade stock thickness and the grind.
The blade probably comes from the factory at about a 30 degree primary bevel, or 15 degrees per side — or a bit wider. Sharpening to a secondary bevel at a larger angle is easy with the Sharpmaker. If eventually the original primary bevel is removed by repeated sharpening, you can re-profile back to 30 degrees as a new primary bevel and start the process over.
