The latest addition to my Kiwi flock...
...arrived today. Flew in from the UK. Quite a feat for a flightless bird, actually. All stainless, with "faux bolster" engraving by Macus Hunt. Exquisite work, needless to say, its arrival made my day. My photographic skills don't do it justice, but I had to share.

Thanks guys!
That led me to pick up an all stainless Kiwi. Liked it a lot, but still preferred the thicker bolster and scales version as I found it much easier to open than the thinner slicker steel. Started playing with the two old slipjoints I mentioned, realized the German one, though no thicker than the Case was a lot easier to open due to the purchase the stamped surface gave my fingers. That was the seed for the idea of having a stainless Kiwi engraved. Then thought that I would be really neat to heighten the "family resemblence" with the bolster and scales version by confining the engraving to an area matching the scales of my jigged bone and Santa Fe Kiwis. Think Marcus Hunt did a fantastic job of transforming my vision into reality.
Thanks Paul. Perhaps my age and experiences both colored my understanding of the SS Kiwi and led to my desire to dress one up a bit. The first decent knife I got as a gift, at about the age of eight as I recall, was a two bladed slipjoint with engraved (stamped really) stainless scales made in "Western Germany". It came with the admonition that it was to be carried only on "special occasions". Ten years later, I received a Case all stainless "Executive" penknife as a graduation gift. So I guess the concept of a thin, all stainless "dress knife" was planted in my brain fairly early.Wightknight wrote:I'd never seen the point of the SS Kiwi. Now perhaps I do ..... A thing of beauty.

It is engraved on both sides. I have pictures of both sides that Marcus took of it before mailing it to me posted on my webpage. Fairly low res, but excellent contrast. I can't seem to get decent contrast when I photograph it. One of these days I will figure out how to set up the lighting and post some better pictures.spyderknut wrote:Is the engraving on one side or both?

What a week! First the Marcus Hunt engraved stainless Kiwi that was the original subject of this thread "flew in" on Tuesday. Then, yesterday, I come home from work to find the stag scaled one I'd talked Bill Wirtel of Santa Fe Stoneworks into building for me sitting on my doorstep. Life is good!
Can you guess what I took out of my pocket to open the package? :D
Love the "look and feel" of stag! Think maybe I'll carry this one today.
