Stainless Kopa Sprint Run Preview

#1

Post by The Deacon »

A mystery package arrived from Spyderco yesterday. Opened it up and found this little beauty and a note from Sal.

Before anyone asks, I have no idea when they'll start shipping, only that neither of my go-to dealers have them in stock yet. However, the fact it came in a labeled box leads me to hope that at least some of the 600 being made are either on the way to dealers or will be very shortly.

As for the knife itself, I'm loving it. Probably because it's thinner than the bolstered versions and does not have a clip it weighs less than any of them, coming it at just 66 grams on my scale. Mind you, it's still noticeably heavy for its size and has a very solid feel. Like all Moki knives, it's tight. So, if you're looking for a knife to flick open, look elsewhere. OTOH, if you're looking for an quietly elegant looking little gent's knife, or for one that can be taken to the next level with custom engraving, this might be the knife for you. I know I'll be doing that with at least one of the ones I have on order. :)

I also wonder how long the handle is with the knife closed. Is the handle slick or is there enough texture so the knife is easy to grip?

Aside from overall thickness and weight, the dimensions are identical with all the other Kopas.
Closed length: 3.438" (87mm)
Overall length: 5.812" (148mm)
Blade length: 2.438" (62mm)
Edge length: 1.938" (49mm)
Blade thickness: .125" (3mm)

I like it. I hope it's a sign of things to come. If they'd do a run of Kiwi 4's like this (with or without a clip) I'd buy two right now.

Very nice Paul! I handled the SS Kopa quite a bit last month at the OKCA show and really liked it (but I really like them to begin with, so that wasn’t a surprise). Sal was particularly proud of it, calling it “Paul’s Kopa”, number 17, and the term that made me sad: “the last one”. Aside from my name also being Paul (at least my CC one will be this “Paul’s Kopa”! ;)), it was a bit melancholy for me to play with it knowing it was the last go of this fabulous model. I recommend folks buy a few if they’re going to customize them by engraving, etc. — they’re likely to go quick! Congrats again Paul, now we expect a full family shot again! :D

Still sad to see a/the bolsterless Kopa, as for me that was one of its standout features. I will get this one as well to have a complete collection, but i am not overly thrilled, sorry.

That's how Spyderco describes it in the 2018 catalog. Whether you see it as a Sprint, or just Kopa #17, it's a run of 600 pieces, like all the original 16 Kopas.

That make perfect sense, Sir! Thank you.

(I wasn't doubting you, just expressing that I had not made that connection :o )

Very nice, I've been waiting a long time for a knife like that. Understated, elegant and clipless, a true gent's knife. I'm also glad to see a Moki made knife again. Thanks for listening Sal.

Very cool. Kopa was my vote for “resurrected models.” I’m hoping this is a sign that we’ll see some new materials in the future. All stainless doesn’t make this a must buy for me, but I’ll be watching this closely.

As much as I wish that was not the case, it is. Sal said the same thing to me in the note that accompanied the SS Kopa.

I know a woman over on BF who can engrave it so that it looks like it has bolsters and then fancy the handle up. That knife looks just perfect for customized engraving.
