Show us your Spyderco Mods

Show us your Spyderco Mods.

Most of my Spyderco knives are stock, however I have a few that I decided to personalize (or modify) and make them better. Well maybe not better, but I did put my personal spin on them. Every knife has a story to tell, and I hope this thread fills up with great knives and equally great stories.

I'll get things started with my Spydiechef. I wanted to try anodizing and decided on a nice royal blue color. The stars were a last minute decision, as I was also working with my son on his Pinewood Derby car at the same time. We had some extra stickers laying around so I stuck 4 of them on the scale to see what would happen. Viola... a one of a kind Spydiechef was born! The nice thing about anodizing is you can go back in the etch and start over if the color is not what you wanted. It only took two tries to dial in the voltage for just the right shade of blue. But using stickers on the last try were perfect. If I had to do it over again I might put more thought into alignment of the stickers, but sometimes the best art happens in the spur of the moment.

Interesting 5 by 5! How do you like the custom serrations compared to a spyderedge?

There really is no noticeable difference in performance. It's more for looks. I think the canted serration channels are very different and make them attractive. Looks good but I wouldn't do it again. I'd rather have a full spyder edge model.

Thanks Evil D. How on earth did I miss that thread? That's exactly what I wanted to see. I guess this thread can be closed down and moved to the original one. Unbelievable.

Well it did get kinda destroyed by the Photophuckit debacle. Most of the recent stuff is still good though.

I read a thread the other day about Pingo Mods and I thought to myself "I want to see all Mods". Don't know how I missed the original thread. You could be right, maybe it was because Photobucket erased all of the history on the internet (forums) with one flip of the switch.

Mine are all pretty mild Mods, but these 3 are my not stock Spydies. DLC S90V Yo2 with Black G-10 handle swap, Cruwear Para 3 with MXG deep carry short clip, and Rit dyed HBDfly :D

Finally got around to it but now my Shaman is perfect! Ground down that knob just behind the beginning of the blade edege. Now it closes without having to worry about my finger being in the way. :)

Positron modification

#16

Post by sinnyc »

I'd read about some owners issues with the Positron but when I found one at a very good price, I jumped on it, knowing I might have to do a little modification to make it suitable. When it arrived, I carried it for several days to get a real feel for it. I'm a lefty so the well-discussed issue of the difficult-to-reach liner lock was even more pronounced for me. I didn't love the sharpish-looking points at the butt, either.

I made some mental notes, removed the scales, and went to work with a Dremel. I used a coarse barrel sander for the primary material removal and then a few increasingly finer grits of sandpaper, the finest of which was, I believe, 2,000. The results may be hard to notice at first, but look carefully at the photos:
- I deepened the thumb cutout for the liner lock as far as I could without threatening the integrity of the scale's inside support.
- I rounded off the sharp angle at the butt. If I'd gone much deeper I'd have risked exposing the tip when closed.
- I sanded the modified areas to bring back the luster of the glossy G10.

It's much easier to close now and the rounded end is quite comfortable in hand. I'm now well satisfied with the knife.
