Question about knives and people's reactions to certain types.

#1

Post by SpyderEdgeForever »

Why do you all think it is that some people who are not knife enthusiasts like we on this forum, at times will react negatively to a one hand opening folding knife or a fixed blade hunting knife, but those same people will be fine with large kitchen type knives that have large blades in the six to ten inch range, but if you show them a one hand opening tactical or pocket knife with a 3 inch blade, that same person will react with a negativity as if that is a "dangerous weapon"? How can they have such a contradictory mindset?

Probably because kitchen knives and hunting rifles have legitimate use/purpose whereas AR-15 = terrorist/military and one hand opening folder = thug/mall ninja.

because of the perception and non specific "Knife use"...
and TV shows
and films
and news

the bad guys always use knives there, many many times OHO folders
Kitchen knives are usually reserved for a few horror movies (trapped in house, assassin around killing people...ala Scream)

This topic has the potential to get way out of hand...if I really say what I think the problem is. Suffice to say the future isn't looking good for people who enjoy the gun/knife hobby, and in just a few years the kids who are going to be voting are the same kids who are eating Tide pods and snorting condoms today so buckle up it's gonna be a wild ride in 2020.

Yes some people tend to fixate on 'scary looking' knives (and guns). A family member saw my blacked out Yojimbo 2 and asked me with a worried tone, is that legal to carry? :rolleye: I was like you've seen me carrying knives for years, why does this one bother you? "I don't know... it just looks dangerous.".

It's called hoplophobia, an irrational fear of weapons. The tactical knives, for lack of a better word, are perceived as weapons. Same thing with firearms that look like the ones used by the military.

This is happening more often because the other side (anti-gun, anti-knife, anti-whatever) have been conditioning people for years to view guns and knives as weapons and not what they really are... TOOLS.

I recently had an encounter at my daughter's school where her teacher had a rather large box delivered held closed by plastic strapping. She tried her pitifully dull scissors with no luck and was about to send for a janitor who had some large shears, I walked over to the box, took out my serrated Endura, and had the straps off in about 10 seconds... and while she did thank me profusely she told me that I should not have brought a weapon into the school.

At that point I turned it into a teachable moment by explaining that my knives, while large, are not weapons but tools I use on a daily basis around the farm. I showed her the one hand opening and explained how much safer and easier to use while managing feed bags, tow ropes, tie downs and of course.... Plastic straps.

I also explained that my daughter carries her own Delica at home and has been taught how to use it safely since she was 7 years old (14yo now) and that really floored her.

We can counter this line of "OMGWTFBBQ IT'S A WEAPON" thinking if we take the time to edge-u-cate the folks who are fearful or apprehensive when they see us using our tools.

As said above, it's hoplophobia, but we can educate and reduce its effects.

Your posts are excellent everyone. I am so glad you were able to teach that person about a knife being a tool, Hoosier.

It seems that hoplophobes who fear guns and knives are also opposed to self defense.

The Surrender Your Knife article ignores the fact
that most of the knife attacks in the UK
are committed by Muslims against non-Muslims.
"Strike the necks of the unbelievers," it says in the Quran.
Is the UK diverse enough, yet?

Article says:
"He then disinfected every blade of the thousands of weapons that came in"

next picture just below shows about 20 kitchen, bread, paring and steak knives weapons :p :o

and the next picture of the "Deadly knives" depicts a wooden stick with mails, a wooden bat with even more nails and a cheap mall dull katana replica :D

what a waste of good usable steel
'nuff said

Sorry if this bends your narrative in the opposite direction to where you want it to go, but you are completely wrong on this.

They are almost exclusively black teenagers killing other black teenagers. They are third and fourth generation sons of Jamaican immigrants who were invited over to work in the 1950s. They ended up being dumped in council estates (projects) in Hackney and Tower Hamlets and their grandkids ended up selling drugs and fighting to the death over zip codes.

It's like The Wire, but with kitchen knives and more rain.

I stuffed enough of them into the back of an ambulance in my time. Saw a lot of cheap gold crucifixes, too.

The Muslims, by and large, just sell them kebabs.

Now would someone please explain to me how this moronic behavior is going to end "knife violence"? This is sickening.

I am glad I don't live in the UK. I feel sorry for those of you who do.

Yeah, the trouble with the British tabloids is they taught the world everything they ever needed to know about fake news long before there was fake news. The Daily Mail never quite forgave the British people for not welcoming that nice Mr Hitler with open arms and is obsessed with immigration, Muslims, and promoting quack cancer cures.

It panders to those brain-free middle England types who want to set their watch back 70 years, who are scared of everything, and think all foreigners are coming to rape their beer while its still warm, and America still owes them for all that wasted tea.

while this thread has heated up a bit in the last posts,
I sadly agree with most of what they say
