The BISON- Where is it?

#1

Post by JD Spydo »

I am waiting very patiently and hopefully for the BISON to come on line. I saw the prototype at the Spirit of Steel knife show in Dallas TX and just loved it. In my opinion I think we are well overdue for a really big Spydie folder. Do I hear some "AMENs" out there? Also I maintain that there should also be a guthook version just like the way they did the "Impala". I would personally name it the "Supreme Hunter". But the name is unimportant at this point. But I do hope that it immerges very soon from the "Maternity Ward" deep within the Great Spyder Factory. I hear the cheering and screaming already. :D :spyder: :)

JD, I got to see the Bison at the NYCKS in November. I liked it, and will certainly buy one if Sal decides to put it into production, even though it's a bit too big for me to seriously consider carrying it. Got the impression, and I could be dead wrong on this, that the jury was still out on this one, at least up to the time I saw it. I think Sal is concerned that the very limited number of places a folder that size is legal to carry might result in a volume of sales too low to justify tooling up for it. Just have to hope that enough show-goers feel the same as you and I to convince him it will sell.

I would like to buy a 5" bladed folder made from quality materials and with an opening hole, too. What could I say, when a saw one with the parameters mentioned above, just with 4.3" blade, I bought it immediately :) :) So, its time for a big Spydie version!

Non applicable, don't worry

Well Spyder brothers you both do echo some concerns about a big folder that could potentially be a problem. However I see no need to worry simply because this knife is not really geared to be an EDC in the same tradition as a Delica, Dyad, or Dodo. This knife is going to be ( I am sure) geared more for a hunting, farm or basic heavy duty knife. I am also sure because of its elegant design it will be in a lot of Collector's footlockers. Albeit look at all of the other great models that they only ran for a year or so because of lower than expected sales. Look at it this way it will at least be another great collector piece with the worst case scenerio. This blade will have the advantage of having the size to do anything a fixed blade can do and being a folder as well. Here in Missouri we can have a big knife as long as it is carried exposed like most fixed blades are when worn with a sheath. And I do expect this blade to come with a very handsome sheath ( hint, hint Mr. Glesser). Also with the size of the blade just think of all the nice Spydie designs and "Special edition" Art Work which could be put on different variations of the knife. Has many possibilities: Don't you all agree? :) :spyder:

Athough I'm crying loud for a big folder, I don't know how the Bison looks like.
Could You please describe it? (of course a photo would be ideal, but I understand, that it's impossible)

I've been waiting for Spyderco to come out with a large folder for a long time now. It sounds like this folder might be just what I'm looking for. The only way I'll buy one though is if it has stainless steel handles. I don't guess its going to be available with that though :( I hope I'm wrong. If it becomes available in stainless steel handles I would buy it even if it wasn't legal to carry in my state. Knife laws really don't bother me because in my experience most LEO's look the other way as long as your not doing something stupid with it or piss them off. I think it will be legal though because I think the limit here in NC is 5 inches but I could be wrong.

Not what I saw

The prototype that I saw in Dallas had an FRN handle to the best of my recollection. A stainless handled variety would be great. Kind of like what they did with the Native for instance. I can think of 3 varieties that would be very cool. First of all do a stainless handle for sure. Second then do an FRN handle with like VG-10 blade steel. Third and like I have been screaming about for a while to make a Hunter Version of the knife. Incorporate a big guthook. Make it with a G-10 handle and S30V blade steel. You know you could make the stainless handled one with an exotic blade steel like AUS-10 ( going back to the Native comparison again). Yeah let's make this happen for sure. And don't forget to name the big one the Supreme Hunter. :spyder:

BTTT...
Just want the concept to keep some momentum. Sure hope it's lefty-friendly, unlike the Camillus Cuda Maxx. Like with a four-position clip and front-lock. Five inch VG10 or S30V, lanyard hole...I can dream, can't I??

Wow! I forgot I ever even wrote this thread. That was back in January. But that just goes to show you that you can't bury a good idea forever. It will come back home to you eventually. That is a great point!!! What did happen to the BISON. Last fall I was reading a lot about it on the Spyderco Forum and it seems like in the last 3 months now you don't hear anything about it any more  .

Yes good question!! Where is the Bison and what has happened to plans for it's release? Inquiring minds like me want to know  :spyder:

Maybe it's one of the 55 designs that Sal & crew are working on.

I'd also hope that the uber-Clipit, designed by Ed Schempp & shown at the A'dam preview show, is still in that design lineup.

Which one is that Chris? I that the folding Kukri? Know Ed mentioned recently over on the BladeFourms Spyderco forum that his Small Persian and Kris may hit the streets before year's end.

if the Bison does go into production i would like to make one suggestion abot a hunters version. Make the handles either Orange or Yellow, i hate using a black or camo knife. This way if you drop it, you arnt completely screwed. Other than that this sounds great.

Barring a change in Spyderco's policy regarding photos, unless the Bison makes it out of the "concept knife" stage to at least the prototype stage, the chances of them posting photos of it, or allowing others to photograph it and post them, are virtually nonexistent. The "value" of a thread like this might be to show that there is still interest in the model and to acquaint some of the newer members with it. I am, however, beginning to fear that distributor and dealer response to it has been underwhelming, and that it may never see the light of day. Or, as others have said, it may just be the temporary victim of an abundance of excellent new designs, both in-house and collaboration, plus sprint run resurections of and variations on some classic ones.

I'm still very much interested, have a CS XL Voyager with the Bowie blade and love it, use it home and away and definitely think there is a place for a large folder, complement's my BK9 beautifully.

Deacon,

I've seen Sal mention it at least once (on BF I believe). I think it's a concept model for them. It looked like an experiment to answer some of the rhetoric on how big & strong a pivot can/needs to be. It was like holding an iron bar -- impressive to me.

Maybe some of the others that attended could add their opinion/impression of it. I'm sure I'm not the only one that remembers it.
