Gift Knife for Brother: your opinions wanted

I like this idea. Easy to sharpen, plus some other tools to increase the utility of the knife.curlyhairedboy wrote: ↑Thu Mar 22, 2018 3:26 amHow about one of the new Clip it multitools? Give him something he can pry/turn a screw with in the shop.

I suggested the Salt because H1 is a tough steel, it will bend before it breaks. It is also rust proof and easy to clean. I suggested Serrated because of the sharpening issue. It is also reasonably priced. The Meat man wrote: ↑Thu Mar 22, 2018 3:18 amThanks everyone! Lots of good suggestions.
Interesting; I hadn't thought of any of the Salt models. I don't think he'd really go for an SE edge though, and the PE edge retention is not too great I've heard. Still, it's a trade off from getting corrosion-proof + ease of sharpening. Definitely one to consider.
What about the Delica or other Seki models?
I think my choices are narrowing between the N5, Salt model, or Delica...
That S90V LW Native in Orange frn is probably the best knife for the money, S90V is really nice steel and it's a nice stout blade. My worry was, he wouldn't be able to sharpen it. Unless he's willing to spend the money ($50) on sharpening gear, his love for the knife will fade as it dulls.
I love the delica, but it is a thin blade, and it sounded like you wanted something thicker. There are saber ground Delicas out there though that have a little thickness to them. VG-10 is very tough and stain resistant. You may run into the same sharpening issues though.
Maybe instead of a knife you should buy him a sharpmaker :D Don't underestimate the gift of being able to sharpen a knife reliably.
Or maybe a PE Dragonfly Salt and a Sharpmaker. My buddy works on cars a lot and carries one of those.

Thanks everyone for the info!
I think I'm going to go with a PE Salt..the general consensus seems to be that it holds an edge as good as AUS-8 or 8Cr13MoV, which would actually probably be a step up from the SAK I think he had been using. Add to that H-1's toughness and rust immunity, and it should work out great for him.

Mechanics (in my area anyway) go through razor blades like it’s going out of fashion!
You can’t go wrong with most options here, I’d add a “this is not a screwdriver/gasket scraper” note for his cairful consideration

Exactly. That's why I think toughness is more important here than edge retention.

We moved here (Idaho) from the American Southeast ("The South") and my wife (who had lived in the South her whole life) described it like this: "In the South, all the boys have guns. In Idaho _everyone_ has guns." Same goes for knives.

Re: Gift Knife for Brother: your opinions wanted
some members here have said "Clipitool", "Salt" and "Black and Satin" and I agree with all three.
My personal gift to him would be a good (the best, in fact) multitool and a good (the best, in fact) mid size folder for his needs, abuse, tasks and uses. :o
That is something like this:
yellow FRN will show and stain quick, black will not.
shiny blade will be easy to spot, black coated will not.
H1 will be easy to sharpen, tough, durable and uncorrodable,
SE will cut for long, long time, and really tough materials
other steels will not
and for the price of other models recommended here, you can add a multitool that will last him a lifetime and probably be more useful to him than even the folding knife
Clipitools are nice but I think you can't beat Victorinox's Spirit in that category :spyder:

2nd on the tenacious. They have so many variations and they are beyond 100% value to cost. I usually carry a Delica wharnie in S30v and a fully serrated tenacious..

Man I know! I almost went for the Tenacious...there are just too many options! :) I probably should've just gotten 4 or 5 knives, give him one and keep the rest. :DSC_PATRIOT wrote: ↑Fri Mar 23, 2018 8:41 pm2nd on the tenacious.
