The most ugly Spyderco mod

#1

Post by Ted »

Every now and then I bump into this one - this has to be .... er...scratch 'has to be' and replace with 'is what I think' .... the most ugly Spyderco modification (original it was a Walker) ever done?

Image

Maybe not surprising that bladeart still hasn't sold them...for $175... :D :D

It's a true saying Ted that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I think that Walker is kind of neat looking. If it were not so totally "right handed" I might be tempted.

I dont know guys i have to say those look pretty sweet to me, but i dont think i would ever pay $175. Perhaps if there was a different animal then i would pay... maybe.

That's cruel, put the poor things out of their misery! :D
As always these kind of mods seem to polarize opinions.

Those Spyderco's are embellished by Jean-Marc Laroche. He is an incredibly talented French knifemaker/artist (fantasy and movie pieces). Several of his designs incorporate the skulls of small monkeys and other critters. Lots of dark, ominous and mediaeval stuff.

Check out his gallery jmlaroche.com

The only question that come to me now is: If he's so talented, why the heck he's he producing such crap... Anyways I guess somebody out there like such "embellished knife".

Not my taste this Spydie-mod. His other designs however look quite good.

Solo are Solo and for the FB01/02/03/04/05, then if you don't like Fixe blade it's ok for me but don't say that both Bill Moran , the Fred Perin and the Temperance are ugly. Those are absolutly great pieces!

Only my 2 cents...

OK - Thanks for the link Joyce - Maybe 'ugly' is not the right word, let's rephrase 'ugly' to 'not my cup of tea...' ? :D It's just that I'm not into fantasy...I stopped looking at LOTR after the 1st one also...

Were these done with FRN or Allum Walkers. If on FRN there would be no way I would pay that much with the really bad lock that they have.

Inherent Beauty

#20

Post by Hannibal Lecter »

I am of the opinion that Spydercos need little embellishment, as they possess an inherent beauty of form and function. Much other than a change of handle materials and potentially some tasteful engraving tends to detract from this beauty, in my eyes anyway.

For those who like this sort of thing, good for you.

For me, I just don't see the point.

Most (not all, by any stretch) knives that undergo some kind of "artist's rendering" seem to ultimately be the worse for it. Some people taking artistic license need their licenses revoked... :p

I likewise do not like my firearms much embellished. Carved stocks and the like may be attractive pieces in their own right, but not on my guns.

To my eyes, such a knife modification makes a lovely Spyderco knife look like a $9.95 mass-produced toy.

I think I'll pass.
