In a past life The Gringo was a printer. :)

He stole a printing press and the rest is history. ;)

I'm probably talking out of school, but Lance is really highly educated with family that's very well educated also. He used to be part of the "rat-race" working in high fallutin places and decided to escape. Cost of Living in Costa Rica ia not high, fresh fish are valuable to sell, and he can also resort to his trained skills to supplement his income.

Sorry Lance if I said too much.

I think it's awesome to see someone live the way he does. You know...it just doesn't take that many 'things' to make us happy. It's far more important to value your time. Pursuing passions leads to happy people, and happy people lead to a (somewhat) happy world. I think Lance serves as a reminder about what to value. Cheers.

(Don't get me wrong about 'things'...I like to have a few spydies. :D )

Hi Southerner, I didn't initially respond to this question because I had already responded to your colorful comments on my youtube videos. I'd like to be clear about those comments though. I'm not into censorship and everyone is entitled to their opinion. You don't have to like me and you are welcome to leave that opinion on my videos if that seems important to you. What you cannot do though is continue to use profanity when you comment on my videos. I put those up for everyone to enjoy, young and old, and the idea is to leave a positive message. I won't allow that message to be lost because you want to come on there and act like a foul mouthed 7th grader. That's not the message I'm trying to leave folks with and I'll ask you to respect that if you choose to leave any more comments. Otherwise I'll just dismiss you from my audience. I'll be taking your comments down but I will leave them up for a couple more days so everyone here can have a clear idea of exactly who they are dealing with. :spyder:

Hey Sal, no worries, you didn't say too much. I've never been a very private person and I have no issue with telling the truth about myself. You are correct on most or your assessment. The main way I am able to live the life I love is by keeping things extremely simple. I mean SIMPLE. I don't do without anything but I try to keep my life streamlined down to the bare essentials. I also have turned my hobby into my profession. I have ongoing business relationships with many of my sponsors that provide me with all of my fishing equipment and clothing. (****, even you have sent me a couple of Salt knives over the years for which I am extremely grateful) I catch most of what I eat and buy a few veggies to go with it. I don't sell fish but I barter it out sometimes, trading for everything from massages to home improvements. I commute on a bicycle. I cut my own hair with a pair of poultry shears. I own one pair of flip flops. Actually, I lost those last year and went 4 months barefoot before I could be bothered to replace them. I don't drink alcohol, I don't do drugs, and I don't chase wild women. (You'd be shocked how much money those three save you). Also, I'm not married and don't have children so when I get up from the dinner table, my family is fed.

As you mentioned, my life was not always this simple. In fact, it was exactly the opposite of most everything I outlined above. I made far more money then but I was miserable. Now I make just enough and I often feel like I might be the happiest guy I know. Back then, I felt like the universe was always out to get me...now I feel like it conspires in my favor. I like those kinds of results so I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing. I also want to make clear that when I talk about that transformation and how happy I am with my life, I'm not in any way bragging or taking credit. I am reminding myself of what it was once like and what it's like today. I am expressing gratitude. That is all.

I took a quick look at his comments on your video. “...foul mouthed 7th grader” may be too kind. I suspect there are other reasons for his uncivil and rude behavior. I will be adding him to my Foe list. Waste of time. (I loved your in-boat sashimi snacks.)

That's cool, realizing choice/options is always good.

Great video Lance, I'll be the first one in line here to say I'm very jealous of you and your lifestyle, envious in fact, and now that I know a little more of your story I really take my hat off to you for having the guts to do what I and 98.5% of every guy here could never do! Love your photos, love your videos and hope you continue to let us into a small part of your world for years to come!

My wife has never read a second of any post here on this forum, but because of me she knows who Gringo is! She's actually called him crazy a couple of times......I wouldn't waste a second of your time on the southerner, not worth it, the real members here very much enjoy every bit of your content Lance!

I really wonder about the people on this forum. You admire some guy who just FOs all day with equipment that his sponsors give him. Of course he has a story of how he got there, don't all the trustfundarians tell how hard it's been? You people are freaks. I prefer the company of working-class slobs to that of the Kellerkinder who pleasure themselves while they fondle their $200 Spydercos.

It's a great video. I posted that on YT, but it's clear some extra positivity might be beneficial here. I'm slightly jealous of anyone who can dump the rat-race, but not quite enough to follow suit! I admit I have also been slightly curious about Lance's back-story, so thanks for sharing.

Hah! Valid point Holzfaeller! :p Sometimes I have the exact some feeling when I look at my life. It does bring up an interesting idea though.

1000 (or even 100) years ago, I don't think anyone considered fishing for your dinner f'ing off. Why is it seen that way today? What is our society teaching us these days? How do we define "work"? Can it be any activity that sustains you physically, mentally and spiritually? Or do you have to kind of hate it for it to be "work"? If that's the case then I think I'll file that away with the other rules of modern culture that I choose to ignore.

Ahh, and for the record, Mom was a school teacher and Dad was a salaried insurance agent. They stuck together and loved us and made a lot of sacrifices so we could get an education but trust funds were kinda scarce. ;)

And, another thing. Sponsors “giving” equipment. I built and run a website about guns. I sometimes review gear. Sometimes I pay for it, sometimes the maker “gives” it to me. In return I use it hard, evaluate it, compare it with similar gear, photograph it, write up a draft, send that to the maker to check for factual errors, rewrite it, then publish it on the site I built and pay for.

“Gives” can mean different things. I’m sure Lance isn’t wallowing in free stuff.

Great video! I'm an avid kayak fisherman, fishing out of a Hobie Outback and a Spyderco nut. Nice to see someone else with the same interests on here!

Ignore the haters. They will always be there. For every hater there will be multiple people you inspire to live life on their own terms. I have similar values as you and I think you are an inspiration.

Some may consider the way I live to be slacking off. I also choose to want less and thus work less. I spent too much of my life already working hard to buy things I don't need. The rat race is for suckers. ;) I have chosen a rural self sufficient lifestyle and couldn't be happier with that decision.

I own my home, pay my own way in life, my family is provided for and I don't take handouts. If you aren't leeching off the system then you aren't doing anything wrong in my opinion. I worked hard to get where I am at now, why should I have to wait until I am old to enjoy it?

Hats off to you, Darby. As much as I love Colorado, the real estate market has gotten so ridiculously overpriced here that I am more and more convinced you made the right choice day by day.
