Can the tri sharpener wear out?
Can the tri sharpener wear out?
The sharpener I had before this Spyderco one became smooth after I used it to sharpen about... 7 knives. It no longer works. Will this eventually happen with my tri sharpener? If so, how long does it take? Thanks!

Wear out--No Way
I have had my 204 Sharpmaker for about 4 years now. I have used it fiercly on all kinds of knives ( big & small) and have really put it through a lot of punishment. Like the guy before me said " you have to clean it". Proper cleaning is the key to getting optimum performance out of it. Any commerical abrasive cleanser works pretty well. My favorite is Bar Keeper's Friend. I use a really cheap cleanser to get the worst of it off. Then I use a toothbrush with BKF and they come out like brand new. I clean mine after every 3 sharpenings. Some would say that would be overkill but I really have good results by using that regimen. :)

Thanks for all the info. =) Glad to know that the sharpener will last for years. The other sharpener was from farberware, I don't think any amount of cleaning will make that one work again.

According to the video, the grays can indeed wear out, they are probably sintered to an open structure. Should take you more than just a few years, but they are indeed considered consumable (you can buy new ones for about $15 a pair). The white ones are sintered to a closed structure and shouldn't wear out ever, again according to the video.
BKF-Bar Keeper's Friend
Well "Micronut" I usually get it here in K. C. in the local grocery stores. You will find it with the cleaning supplies. They usually put it on the shelf right next to the AJAX & COMET. It is in a can just like an AJAX can. You can go to their website http://www.barkeepersfriend.com. Around here it is also in all the hardware stores. It is by far the best cleanser I have used on the stones. Like I said in the other posts I do the first round of cleaning with a very cheap generic brand cleanser to get the worst of the filings off. It will save you a lot of $$$ in the long run to do it that way. A lot of times I soak them in hot water before I clean them. :) :spyder: :)MicronuT wrote:where can i find Bar Keepers Friend?
