Lets hear some stories about knife accidents and talk about how you may have prevented it :D

I'll start.

First off, I'm not stupid but I definitely make stupid mistakes on occasion and I accept that. I feel like if you handle knives enough you will probably get cut eventually, maybe not for all of you but it's definitely the case for me. Also, feel free to make fun of my story if you'd like but I'd ask you don't do that to others. (reference shiny footprint philosophy).

It all started watching a review of "blades I'd buy" as a collaboration between a youtube channel "the late boyscout" where he is talking about blades he would definitely buy at blade HQ. Anyway, I think a few videos later I came upon one where he is talking about closing the lock back (I think it was either a delica or endura) one handed. I thought to myself well, my pacific salt is basically a waterproof endura.. I'm going to learn that technique. This knife for me has only seen a few fishing trips so it's pretty tight still (as to be expected of a relatively newer knife- right?) and I was testing out the retention of the knife with the back lock depressed while trying to catch the top . Well, as it turns out it wasn't quite as tight as I was thinking and it snapped down on my index finger. I keep my knives very, very sharp. If it can't shave it's taken out of rotation and touched up within a week. The wound bled for about 20 minutes before I could get it to stop and I knew when I couldn't extend my finger I was dealing with more than I could treat myself. I work in emergency medicine and had a friend look at it and his response was "dude, you need to see a hand surgeon, you severed an extensor tendon".

A nasty spider bite indeed. Three weeks later and I still have a pin in my finger and I'll definitely have to exclude becoming a hand model someday but overall I learned a valuable lesson and gained some respect for my pacific salt (oh she bites) as well as an appreciation for the PM2 locking mechanism (oh she can bite too, lets not let that happen).

What I should have done was kept my hand out of the way of the blade when testing the retention (duh) or simply accepted a two hand closing technique out of a knife I use for a specific role when I'm fishing (also duh). Had this happened on a camping trip where I may or may not have been able to get attention sooner I would have ruined a lot of fun for myself. My mom wasn't too pleased when she came to visit and I was still practicing the technique with my delica - (another thing I wouldn't recommend); although just to spite my scenario and just for the record, I did still learn how to close my delica one handed and more safely with the respect I should have had in the beginning for my pacific salt. Which I now close two handed while I still have both of them. :rolleyes:

Ouchie! Sorry that happened, but at least chicks dig scars. Just say it happened in a knife fight or something :)

For me, a couple of days ago I was fidgeting with my new T-Mag and had set it down on the coffee table/stand next to the couch I was sitting on. My dog came over for a little lovin', with his steel choke collar. The T-Mag 'leapt' from the table and stuck to his collar in the open position. He didn't understand my panic, so he too became panicked. Luckily I was able to break the magnets' hold without him being cut...but my thumb got a little spyder-kiss. Nothing a bandaid and a smack to my forehead didn't solve.

A strange incident, for sure.

Again, sorry you got bit so bad! I'm hoping for a speedy recovery.

Well, my fix was to put a gate to fence off the living room that I can close while I'm playing. It was such a freak accident that I don't think anyone should be worried. The fact that it opened in the process of being 'sucked' off of the table is probably rare.

It scared us both, but now makes for a funny story :)

We finally make the trek out there and we are all liquored up and I remember I haven't seen her Civilian. She tells me where it is, I get it and start handling it a bit too familiar and closed it on my finger. Serrations HURT a lot more than plain edge

I have 9 Spydies. Only one has bitten me and it has done it twice: the Salt DF2 PE. Both times in less than two months.

First, I was cutting an apple and the blade got sort of stuck in the core. Instead of pulling it out, I forced it through and sliced the tip of my left index finger. Point DF2, dumb of me.

The second time I was out in front of the house and my toddler was playing, so I decided to cut up a few overgronw branches and leaves. All I had on me was my Salt DF2 so I went at it with it. Suddenly my neighbors arrive and my kid start running towards them to say hi. I looked over this see where he was going but instead of stopping cutting I did one slice too many. Let’s just say my left thumb looks somewhat different now. Point DF2, dumb of me, again.

But man, do I still love my Salt DF2.

My wife made me get a sheath for our K08 (Santoku) because she cut herself on the back corner (unsharpened portion) of the blade.

Lots of people have unsafe habits learned from using bolstered European pattern knives where the bolster extends down to the heel of the edge. Those habits become dangerous when using a Japanese pattern that is thin and sharp all the way to the heel. I much prefer a thin heel, but I’m mindful that this won’t be safe in some people’s hands.
