Wow Sal, I can't believe someone would offer that. that's incredible.

I remember that posting about "Kindness of our hearts" - I can't imagine how someone would do something like that. On that note, while I really appreciate whoever this person is that offered their Cru-Wear PM2; however, I don't think I'd feel right receiving something so generous as a result of thievery. The true value to me in this particular Cru-Wear was it's status as a gift from my grandfather anyway and I don't like the idea of someone else sacraficing as a result of my bad fortune. (the black one I just loved because I loved it as a knife). Lets see what UPS and the guys in service &. repair come up with.
Statement seems genuine to me. Kudos to you, really...well said.

I'm just trying to stick up for OP here as a lot of comments seem to be blaming him or suggesting he should have done something differently. I'm sure they have worked it out, but he shouldn't have to hear people tell him it's his fault or the equivalent of "tough luck".
Some people did something you don't like so you decide to tell Spyderco what they need to do? That about right?

Don't blame others for your actions Steel. Hasn't anybody ever told you that before? If not then it's about time someone did. See, I'm not being snarky I'm just helping you. :)

If you would actually read my post instead of just grasping at straws for an opportunity to be Spyderco's white knight, you would see that I was merely trying to explain to OP what should happen in these situations so he knows his rights as a consumer. I felt that was more welcoming to our new friend than some people who said it was an expensive lesson for him. I never addressed Spyderco and demanded anything of them. Nice try though.

Everyone at both UPS and Spyderco has been very nice and opened an investigation into the situation. So far as I'm concerned, I feel like it's being handled correctly.

Just to express my own opinion as the originator of this discussion. I don't feel entitled to invoke a right or a victimization position that warrants personal vindication. Sometimes crappy things do indeed happen but just to be clear I posted this to share the experience so it doesn't happen to a fellow blade enthusiast as well as what we can learn about how to move forward when you loose a knife or have one stolen. Of course I hope it all works out and I'm able to add back PM2's to my rotation and collection since I already miss carrying and using these blades but I don't think there is much value in appointing an entity at fault here because it could go any direction if you want it to depending on your view. The only person at fault IMO is the thief who stole the package.

What I've learned so far is that there is indeed a protocol in place for this when it happens as the shipper contacts UPS and they discuss what happened and what is going to happen for the customer. I've also learned that there are some very very generous people on this forum (reference Sal's post about someone offering to replace my Cruwear). Not on this topic, but on another, I've also learned that there are people who can seek to take advantage of a scenario like this (or create a false one of their own) - something I'd like to stay far away from and that I hope others do as well. I've also learned about the philosophy of leaving shiny footprints and while I don't think we have to reference that here and now I'd like to keep that strong in the discussions I start or am associated with.

I reread the comments and still can't find "tough luck" in this thread. Not even a suggestion it was. The people are pretty good about that kind of thing here. There are some ideas on how to keep it from happening again.

You're the one that isn't very good at this.

Everything he said is factually correct. The shipper is responsible when an item is lost or stolen. A lot of people don't understand their rights as a lot of companies try to get out of their responsibilities. I am not, nor is Steel City saying Spyderco is acting shady, but it IS there responsibility to rectify this situation and make things right with the OP.

Any compensation from UPS to spyderco has nothing to do with the OP. Spyderco is 100% legally responsible to the OP, not UPS. And it is NOT incredibly generous for Spyderco to replace or reimburse the OP - it is their legal responsibility. Nor, do they have any right to drag things out waiting for UPS to work out their claim with Spyderco.

Sorry if you think that it's rude to explain the situation, but it's not. If you think that Spyderco is not responsible for the OP's knives then you are ignorant of the law.

The only snag in this situation is that the OP doesn't have any leverage with Spyderco should they choose to drag things out or not fully compensate (Again, I'm NOT suggesting that Spyderco is behaving that way at all - just discussing the legal ramifications). It's really a lost cause trying to force a company to pay if they choose not to for such a small amount, particularly if you're out of state - the legal costs will far exceed the value of the knives.

Had this been an item purchased from Spyderco (or a dealer) with a CC that was lost or stolen in shipping, then the choice would be to reship an identical item or refund the card. They don't have a choice, nor can they require you to wait on the UPS settlement. If they don't refund or reship then a single phone call to your CC company will have the charges reversed - again, because that's the law!

Steel City understands the law and was attempting to explain to the OP what his rights are, nothing rude about that at all.

I don't know exactly what is going to end up happening yet and I really appreciate all the information from you guys. I think it's well-intended and genuine. I'm not sure if it's indeed fact, but here is what I am sure of.

Right now I'm doing just fine waiting things out and I find solace in a few very real things.
1.) A gentleman named Ben said he would give me a call sometime this week last time I spoke with him
2.) Sal himself said he was confident everything get worked out just a few days after this topic was posted
3.) I'm a Spyderco nut, I believe in the products, the company and what they stand for

Combine that with my newest fixed blade on my nightstand (Bushcrafter 162) and I don't need much else to sleep at night.

Joe,

This is a discussion forum - people discuss things here, that's whar it's for. The topic of this discussion is a stolen package. Steelcity explained the law and reasonable expectations and you condenscendingly admonished him multiple times. I don't feel the need to lecture "people", I feel the need to lecture you. Steelcity was right and you were both wrong and rude in the manner which you adressed him. Posting your opinion and then stating "No need to answer because I really don't care." is exceedingly childish. It's okay, I know you're reading every word.

Well guys, I have to say Spyderco has once again impressed me. Not with a product or a feeling that product gives me but with the professionalism, kindness and excellence of the company itself.

Spyderco is replacing the black PM2 and giving me a store credit for the lost/stolen Cruwear PM2.

I've had it rough these last few months in a series of tough breaks to say the least. I'd really like to thank the company for proving what they stand for in their customer service (although, I didn't feel the need to test it to begin with to be honest). I got on this forum with the intention to inform others to make sure that what happened to me doesn't happen to them and little did I realize what type of altruism I was going to see.

Not only is this the end of a negative occurrence in my life, but it makes me hopeful that it's a turning point for a few others (perhaps that is a bit optimistic of me, but I'll take it). Knives have always made me happy, but I had no idea a knife company would make me feel this way. I was already a Spyderco fanboy but now the knives from them are that much more special seeing the culture of the people that make, distribute, service and even own them.

Also, thanks to all of you on here for listening to my story. Not only did you offer knowledge, information, advice, and a source of laughter in light of what happened but someone I don't even know offered to outright replace the knife. Kudos everyone, have a kickass weekend. :spyder:

Great news, though I'm not surprised. Bit of advice - Before that store credit burns a hole in your pocket look long and hard at the Gayle Bradley 2....
