Fixed blade solution

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

My wife has famously tiny hands; she is tiny herself. Anyway, she had a meeting late tonight and I was feeling cautious. So, I tried to give her my Manix 2 LW but, though she can open it, it is a very slow process because the knife is too big. I suddenly had a bright idea. I reached for my purple Izula. I often carry this in my pocket and with slight thumb pressure the sheath literally flies off like it had a spring. I gave that to her to try and, viola! she was able to do it without issue. So she stuck it in her pocket and went off to the meeting. Problem solved. (fortunately she did not need to use it)

There is something to be said for a well designed fixed blade in the pocket if the sheath has a place to press to make it fly off like that Izula does.

I agree. I have a CRKT Folts Minimalist with the Wharncliffe blade. I took all the gizmos off the kydex sheath and sometimes just drop it into my pocket. The sheath comes off with a push of the thumb. I like the idea of carrying a small fixed blade as my do-whatever knife but it seems the choices are rather limited.

I've been carrying a Street Beat in my pocket for a couple weeks now for work. Very easy to draw out in a hurry.

The Izula sheath actually isn't too bad for a plastic molded sheath. I like the Izula sheath better than the BK14 sheath but I like the BK14 better than the Izula.

I have pocket carried the Izula, the BK14, the BK24, the Street Beat and quite often a Mule with the flat Halpern scales.

This is one reason I'm so fond of paracord loops for fixed blade EDC. Slips on a belt easily and stays secure, but you can pocket carry it with a world less bulk than tekloks or gclips. I use paracors for smaller knives and reserve g clips for larger ones generally. If you check my threads on the Cold Steel Spike or Spyderco Ark you'll see some examples.
May you find peace in this life and the next.

Sometimes there is nothing better than a good fixed blade in your pocket and one that is good quality but not expensive is even better. Two of the best I have found for this role are the Esee Izula and the Cold Steel Mini Pendleton Hunter. The Izula sheaths are pretty good and yet a push of the thumb causes the sheath to actually fly off the knife. The Izula has the same blade length as a Delica but is much more robust.

If I carry my Izula in my RFP, I also carry my phone in there and the Izula tends to ride towards the rear of the pocket and out of the way of the phone. It actually rides better than some folders.

It happened again, tonight. My wife got called to a late evening/night meeting at 9pm. She had to walk a little way to the office. I handed her the Izula as she left and she promptly put it in her pocket, remarking how much easier it was to access than a folder. I felt better that she had it with her. Back home she would have pocketed a .38 Spec. or a 9mm, but that cannot be, here.

I'd like to see a rescue / assist type blade in a fixed setup.

the rescue / assist have a dull, non-pointy tip, for sliding under a seat belt when cutting it loose.

30 seconds with a Dremel might be faster than waiting for a production solution ;)

Something else to keep in mind for women: When a woman is on her menstrual/period cycle, there is less sensitivity in the hands because of water retention, and this interferes with nerve sensitivity. When that time of the month is operating on them, the woman needs a handle on a knife that takes that into consideration. Any women on here can attest to this.

Sometimes their hands swell. A fixed blade is just the ticket. Also, in a panic situation, a fixed blade takes a lot less fine motor skill to get into action.

Yes, an ARK XL might be a good solution.

That would be a BARK. I've mentioned the idea to Sam fairly recently.

I'd love to see the BARK make it into production.
