Yeah I agree. I'm carrying my SS delica 4 today and thought the same thing. I'd laid the bevel down on this one so it slices but it could be better with a higher grind. Thinner would be nice too but I do recall dropping this one from about 3 feet on cement right on the tip with minimal damage.Jazz wrote:Forgot about that one. I must admit the FFG is the best overall functional grind but lacks character. I voted hollow grind because it works great and looks awesome. The best example is the Manix, 1st Gen hollow grind may have been a little heavier but I would say to a certain extent just as good as FFG and looked a lot better in my humble opinion. It would super awesome if we could get a CTS Maxamet variant with hollow grind and maybe the same swedge the native 5 has. Killer folding knife.
Hollow grinds do have a nice look to them, the Yojimbo 2 is my favorite.
Thanks for the welcome.
Sure like them spydies.

The SE Hawkbill Salts, Ladybug, Dfly, Tasman are Sabre Hollow Grind AND Chisel Edge (I think all SE spyercos are chisel edge right?).ThePeacent wrote:I thought the Pacific was a strict saber grind? :confused:SpyderEdgeForever wrote:I picked Saber Grind and Scandi Grind. On some I like a full flat grind, too, and also the apple seed grind.
Also, is it true that one can have a "Hollow Saber Grind" that combines the best of the hollow grind with the best of a saber grind, and which knife does Spyderco make that would be closest to this? The Pacific Salt?

If by "favorite" you mean which edge geometry you feel offers the best balance of performance and aesthetics, then my vote is convex/no.
My real-world vote is, if the blade cuts well and looks OK, then I will gladly use it! FFG or high hollow/sabre are both very acceptable blade geometries for all-purpose cutting, with FFG or very thin-edged convex being the only useful kitchen knife profiles IMO.
Scandinavian grind is also a great edge geometry, but requires the right steel to be functional, so it's never going to have the wide acceptance that the "regular" grind profiles do.

yeah all the Spyderedged knives (at least all my 12 Salts and the Lil' Matriarch) are Chisel Edge, but now that I think of it it does make sense that they are "Hollow Sabre", it just sounded weird when I read it.ZrowsN1s wrote:ThePeacent wrote:The SE Hawkbill Salts, Ladybug, Dfly, Tasman are Sabre Hollow Grind AND Chisel Edge (I think all SE spyercos are chisel edge right?).SpyderEdgeForever wrote:I picked Saber Grind and

Re: Favorite Grind Style "Poll"
It depends on the application.
For folders a ffg with a v edge and a microbevel works well, slices good and is durable enough for rough use. It is also easy to maintain on the sharpmaker.
For fixed blades I will sharpen in the field with a pocket stone a v edge with a microbevel is easy to touch up and so is a scandi with no microbevel. I like flat grinds, scandi grinds and sometimes saber grinds for field knives.
For wood carving I like scandi grinds a lot and also flat grinds with convex edges. No microbevels.
In the kitchen convex edges are my preference. Either an apple seed grind or a flat grind with a convex edge. Sandpaper on a mousepad is my preferred way to maintain them. No microbevels.
I only run microbevels on grinds with a v edge. A convex or scandi are not a true convex or a true scandi with a microbevel.

Voted FFG & Sabre, my real favorite would be a mix of those two. I like an almost full flat grind best, basically a very high sabre grind.
Re: Favorite Grind Style "Poll"
For everyday use a FFG that’s thin behind the edge is my choice, both in pocket and in the kitchen. I voted yes to microbevel because it is easy to maintain and increases durability without robbing too much performance. I also voted for appleseed/hamaguri because it’s my favorite grind. These aren’t found on many production knives because they are hard or impossible to do by machine and expensive to do by hand.

I like the FFG for cutting, depending on blade thickness. High hollowgrinds for slicing small diameter material, although that happens infrequently with me. Convex grinds on heavy choppper type knives.
Sharpening does not come easy for me, so invariably I end up with a micro bevel or two :)
