New steel for FRN, options, Go !

Hey guys,

I was wondering what kinds of steel you would dream of seeing in the FRN models in future.

Super Blue was a dream,
As was HAP 40 (missed out on that one, but I've got a caly on preorder !)

So what's the next step for you guys,
A bit of community CQI , let's say

Personally : sage green handles and SLD magic !
(Have a kitchen knife in this steel, and it's a dream both for sharpness and ease of sharpening)

BFK - The steel chart on XVC11/HAP72 is ridiculous! I wonder why they have not come out in sprints or other models, cost maybe? Or maybe they are too similar to M4 and Maxamet to really have a market...

Cost is likely part of it as well as probably the risk of venturing into uncharted territory and experimenting with new heat treatments. It may also have to do with whether or not the maker is willing or able to work with those materials. Only Spyderco knows. I have mentioned both quite a few times now.

I am not even fully on board the high carbide hype train. I like all steels for the most part. The SLD Magic and Super Gold/SG2 have me intrigued as well. Boy, you talk about marketing though! One has magic it the name and the other has super and gold. I am ready for the Magic Epic Platinum steel to drop. :rolleyes: That sure would look good on a tang. :cool:

HAP 72 looks to be a serious contender,
SG 2 and SLD magic have Manganese and silicon (may make them a lot easier to machine)

HAP72 has popped up a few times on a few Russian forums, our guys are doing stuff to it and the reviews I've seen are glowing. It may be hard to work with, though - not just the heat treat (which would, I assume, have to be devised by Sal and somehow transferred over to Japan), but the grinding and etc.
And I'm always up for more M4! Although personally, I'd love to see some Shirogami (white paper) steel. It's kind of like Super Blue, but gets a better edge and stays sharp longer in exchange for some more brittleness. High-class Japanese kitchen knife stuff.
By the way, does anyone know about YXR7?

SLD Magic looks to be D2 with slightly lower chrome and vanadium. Super gold has been around for years and used by Falkniven and Kershaw. It's right around the S30V class with lower amounts of carbide if I remember correctly.

Somewhere in a past thread Cliff S. talked about YXR7.

Why not? FRN is a handle material damsteel is a blade material. So yea, what am I missing?

As far as I know, Damasteel doesn't cut especially well, it's more of a classy material. And FRN, in my opinion, doesn't look especially classy in comparison to CF, SS or G10.

Hmm, looks quite similar to S30V,
similar amount of carbon and chrome,
more wolfram, less vanadium.
So smaller carbides ?
