Thanks D.
Perfect timing. I have a few Spyderedge models that I've never really carried, in part because I didn't want to mess with sharpening them when maintaining plain edges is so easy. I have a Sharpmaker and it looks easy enough to use with serrations, just never got into it. However, I picked up a Byrd Meadowlark hawkbill recently and intend to put it through its paces (ridiculous amount of knife for $20 btw). This vid will come in very handy. It came decently sharp, but not close to your Dragonfly and I know I'll be sharpening it up soon.

People use those brass guard rod things? I threw mine out the day I got my sharpmaker.

Yep, I like my fingers and my knives are sharp. Nothing wrong with a little common sense safety precaution. It's not like they're in the way or anything.Vivi wrote:People use those brass guard rod things? I threw mine out the day I got my sharpmaker.

I am surprised anyone would NOT take the time to use the brass rods.
Saved my hand a few times.
Actually, I'm not really surprised....

Good video D. What safety precautions do you take when you use the dremel? To prevent accidental blade launching?

Re: Sharpening Serrations/Power Stropping/and the ramblings of a madman
Basically you can only use the Dremel in an edge trailing fashion with the wheel spinning down/off the edge since going the other direction would cause the edge to bite into the buffing wheel and then you'd have problems. As long as you follow that rule you should be fine. You could probably achieve the same effect with a bench grinder with a buffing wheel as long as the wheel can get between the serrations, but that's why I prefer the Dremel. I usually marker the edge too which helps to show you what part of the edge you're buffing and helps to prevent rounding the edge off. Just like standard stropping a light touch is best.ZrowsN1s wrote:Good video D. What safety precautions do you take when you use the dremel? To prevent accidental blade launching?

Thanks for the info. If I could get my Spyder edges that sharp, it might change my opinion about them.

D, I waited and waited to see you power strop ...
I strop the only SE knife I have my Ladybug on the corner edge of a piece of stiff cowhide loaded with chrome oxide it works pretty well. I have a dremel, mops and plenty of different compounds and would welcome some pointers. :)

I tried doing it again on video but I couldn't hold it right.

Re: Sharpening Serrations/Power Stropping/and the ramblings of a madman
Just seems like a waste of time to me. Been using the sharpmaker for over a decade without rods and never cut myself. Figured I wasn't the only one that tosses them out but guess I'm wrong reading through this thread.Evil D wrote:Yep, I like my fingers and my knives are sharp. I've been driving for 20+ years but I don't mind my airbags or seatbelt or antilock brakes or traction control being there either. All it takes is one good distraction to end up in the ER. If they got in the way or were otherwise a hindrance then I'd probably toss them out but I almost never take my Sharpmaker apart so they go on once and don't really bother me. Heck I almost never use it except on the 40 slots so I don't even have to move them.Vivi wrote:Just seems like a waste of time to me. I've thought about buying either the plastic or plywood kits for my little grandkiddies.palonej wrote:Great job on the vid Dave!

Are they any good as in actually working like a real folder and is there any difference between the plywood and plastic (apart from the obvious) the little plywood one looks really nice. :)

Oh it's a zero grind alright lol.
The kit is pretty nice. She broke the lock notch off so it functions more like a slip joint now but it does actually lock when new.

I get mine pretty darn sharp with my sets of Spyderco 701 Profiles. I'm hoping that this upcoming Sprint Run of the 701 Profiles will have more grit selections like ultra-fine ect.ZrowsN1s wrote:Thanks for the info. If I could get my Spyder edges that sharp, it might change my opinion about them.
Although I've always learned a lot from Brother EVIL D as he is as fanatical as I am about getting his Spyders sharp as a witch's tongue
I really think it is very important for people to learn the use of manual tools like the 701 Profiles, Sharpmaker ect just so they can learn the basic principles of sharpening. That goes for plain edges and serratons alike.

Oh don't I know it man, one of the videos of my car finally cracked 20k views and it only took like 8 years :pmb1 wrote: Subscribed to your channel. You're going to be rich! haha
