S110V rolling?

#1

Post by fivesense »

I've been using my PM2 in S110V for basic cutting; opening mail, packages etc... I just noticed that the tip had a rolled over edge, which was easily remedied on a diamond sharpener. But I even saw some minor chipping.

I haven't used this hard yet, and all the slicing has been free of hitting metal (staples, etc...). Is this a characteristic of S110V? I've never seen the rolled over edge on any of my S30V blades. It bums me out a little bit because I'd read such great things about S110V, particularly on the PM2.

I also had some rolling on about a third of the factory edge, I cleaned up what I suspect was a burr on the brown stones and it's been fine since. I have got a few little catches in the edge (micro chips?) ie when I run on my fingernail down the edge and when tested on paper it catches, they don't bother me in normal use and can be stropped out fairly easily.

Rebevel to get to the good steel under. Most factory edges aren't optimal. Touching up really doesn't remove enough of the bad steel.

As said above many factory edges have burrs and/or overheated steel on the very edge. A couple thorough sharpenings usually help to get to good steel.
