All time favorites

Post by fredswartz »

Of all the knives that I own, few strike a chord with me. Among them are the Khalsa (with all it's warts), the Standard, the Wegners, the CF Delica, the Viele, Shabaria and the Ayoob. Some that just don't turn me on are the Starmate, the Lum Tanto's, the big Calypso, the J.D. Smith, the Centofante's, the Terzuola's and the Herbst. I have all the ones that are moot to me but will probably never carry them. What turns a person on to a certain knife? I don't know. But in addition to Spyderco's, the Benchmade 310's, Emerson Commanders and the small Buck Strider (a workhorse) are among my favorites. How about yours?

Hi Fred, for me, all the Jess Horn's, especially the C27, the Schempp Persian, the J.D. Smith, the Kiwi, and the Calypso Jr. are all turn ons, but the Stretch has managed to put all of them in the back seat. For all except the Stretch I'd have to say it's a combination of winning looks and great functionality. As for the Stretch, it just works so darn well that it seems better looking every time I use it.

I concur with your findings on the Stretch. I really liked that blade on the Military in S30V, but the Stretch is quickly becoming just as well liked. Good eye! :) I have a Griptilian that is also well liked and gets out to be used fairly often.

Deacon, I agree on the Stretch; it's looks are rather out of style (reminds me of spydies in the late 80s) but by God it works! I really should finish my review of it, as this knife deserves more ink, or pixels rather. :)

Among my very favorite vintage spydies are the Standard, Rookie, pre '98 Delica. I'd like some of the older models with minor improvements (like a linerless G-10 Worker, an S30V Deica in full flat grind or a compression lock Shabaria). ;)

Hello,

This thread has got me thinking, I find allmost all Spyderco knives appealing. Some like the Civilian don't apeal because simply I have no need for a SD knife, great design though. I don't collect knives per say, but a man can't have enough knives if you know what I mean :D Some like the C-15 Bob T, or Jess Horn collaborations I could see buying if they weren't so **** expensive, obviously because of collector demand and the fact some were discontinued years ago. My favorites so far are Calypso Jr. SE micarta, Dodo SE and a friend got me a FRN Merlin SE that I beat on all the time with no problems, I like the hawkbill blade "reach out and cut something" quality. But if I ran into a Jess Horn micarta or Bob T C-15 at a good price, yeah would get me one of those quick!

Cheers, Rob

About 90% of all :spyder: knives are literally a work of art to me. Even the ones I don't like by either reason of design, lock type or blade configuration I still have a great deal of respect for by virtue of their quality workmanship. No offense intended there " fredswartz" but I agree with "severedthumbs" that your "don't like" list is some of my favorites. Albeit we are all as different as our fingerprints and so are our likes & dislikes. That is why Spyderco is by far my favorite factory knife company. Their line is so varied and there are literally blades for every purpose. Among my very favorites are as follows: Renegade, Massad Ayoob, Titanium Bob Lum tanto, blue PE Dodo, & the Spyderhawk. GOD Bless the Great :spyder: factory

Harpy Yes, D'Allara No?

The Harpy, Spyderhawk, Merlin, and Civilian/Matriarch all appeal greatly to me. I purchased a D'Allara Rescue on a whim, and really don't care for it. Don't get me wrong: fantastic knife overall, great design, very robust, and the smoothest opening/lockup of any knife I own. There is just something that doesn't "speak" to me in this knife, something almost subliminal. I suppose I need to purchase a Merlin and order a Civilian now...

A really big 10-4 on all the knives there that you mentioned Skurto. As a matter of fact I just got another Spyderhawk and another Matriarch in the mail today. I already had those knives but I got extras for the sole purpose of having "Back Up Units" on hand. I just recently lost a Spyderhawk on a deer hunt. I know some of you are saying "get over it and grow up". Well I am not over it. It is gut-wrenching to loose a knife of that quality. I literally have a comradery with my EDC's that only you guys & gals in Spyderland would begin to understand. I am now going to make it a point to have back up units for all my EDC's. NO EXCEPTIONS!! I also like the Impala for hunting, my new S30V Military,VG-10 Police CE, and my best "stand by" THE DYAD with ATS-55. :) :spyder: :D

My EDC is the large Tim Wegner. It's great for the work I do. But my favorite has to be the Viele. Second is the Tim Zowada. I love the collaboration knives.

:spyder: My faves are: the Flat-Iron Folder, the Lum Chinese, wegner jr., goddard jr., jess horn and the blue shell inlay PE Native. I would love to see the Lum Chinese in a micarta version.

For heavy work, I have a beat up old stainless Mariner and a Remote Release that see alot of use. I still prefer the clip mechanism on the Remote Relase and not the Snap-It - it's outta the way of the blade.

Remote Release vs the Snap It

#16

Post by JD Spydo »

Hello there "saltydog"! I totally concur with you on your observation of the Snap it having the latch mechanism right in way of the cutting action of the blade itself. I bought me a Remote Release for utility uses over the Snap It for that very reason. I have heard in the past though that the reason for that design of the Snap It had something to do with "rapelling". For some reason people who climb up rocks and sides of cliffs ( not my baby) can utilize that style better. If someone out there can tell me and "saltydog" the reason for that design; well then I like he would like to know the reason for it. However I do have about 8 of them in my collection. :spyder: :)

I love the Military models. Playing catch-up IMO is the Para and it may eventually overtake it.

Always have the Micarta Jester with me, guess it'd be my favorite and gets used more than any others (just ordered a sheath for it from Eric at On/Scene Tactical). Next - Lum Chinese Folder, which fits my hand perfectly and is designed and feels like a true "custom". Military - the hiking/working/camping champ that I carry in a beautiful leather sheath done by Gary W. Graley.

Lum Chinese Folder

#19

Post by Clay Kesting »

Over the years I've developed a preference for flat ground blades because of their cutting power. As a result my favourite knives for EDC are Calypso Jrs (micarta and grey and black FRN) closely followed by my aluminium Centofantes (grey and blue). However my all time absolute favourite is the Lum Chinese Folder particularly the gunmetal blue version. It combines the cutting power of a flat ground blade with an exceptional design. I was playing with it last night and I was as overcome by its flowing lines as I was the first time I saw photos of the prototypes all those years ago (remember them Blades :) ).

Favorites are the Starmate, Wegner, Wegner Jr. (still looking for one!), original Chinook. Peter Herbst, green Chinese Lum, and Lum Tanto Folder.

I am still hoping Spyderco will design something that recalls these exceptional knives. The current crop of baby Spydies doesn't do it for me.
