Anyone that have experience as jail deputy
Anyone here with experience as jail deputy thatcan give me advice and help me out I'm new to law enforcement
Re: Anyone that have experience as jail deputy
I only have a little experience as an inmate. :)
They locked me up a couple of times when I was young for being drunk and disorderly. Once in the middle of winter and I nearly froze to death because the bastards wouldn’t give me more than one blanket.
I hope you’re a nice jailer and a little more generous with blankets.

Some places that is the only way to enter the system. It all depends on the local sheriff.I try my best I like working with people and I want be sheriff but I just turned 20 so one more year but jailer is good way to start career
I have a career in a state corrections system if you have questions . Not many county jails keep prisoners after the trial ends so there are differences in the inmates. Ours came in pretty scared and wild but settled down. Yours mostly are learning and adapting.
Not to be cynical but there is always a weak link on every shift. Possibly a crooked one. The way you can tell who are the crooked guards is the ones the inmates go out of their way to show disrespect to are usually ones who are up to something bad, or just weak. The strict ones they like to grumble about but they respect that because they feel safer in a place run correctly. In a situation where things turn bad what gets the officers through is personal respect. If they respect you they will do so even during a riot. If they don't they use break downs in order to lash out and the guards that are dishonest will not be treated well.
The best thing you learn is how to tell people "no". Things like people who barely know you asking to borrow your truck to move furniture. Some people have trouble telling people no. I don't. :)

Re: Anyone that have experience as jail deputy
So to be successful in correction I have learn how to say no ? That's interesting to me also I have concern what about if I'm in cell block myself and some inmate go crazy if I got respect from other inmates do they get involved or they let me handle the situation myself because I really don't want to cuff someone and another 10 inmates jumping me from the back of that ever happened to you
Also how about carrying concealed gun off duty can I carry under hr 218 ? And what about knives inside facility if sheriff allows it is it good idea or not

"if I got respect from other inmates do they get involved or they let me handle the situation myself"
That depends on the ones involved. They are people. Some will, some won't. You have a better chance if you treat them respectfully without being too lenient. You are there to do a job, keep order and help them stay safe not be friends. It takes a while to develop relationships and reputations. With men inmates they tend to respect older men so young guys in charge tend to get less respect. Dealing with women inmates? I'd say don't do it. :) No way you could be prepared at 21 to deal with that situation.
"off duty can I carry under hr 218 ? And what about knives inside facility if sheriff allows it is it good idea or not"
Totally depends on state law as well as the sheriff's policy. I say no to any weapon inside. Anything you bring in can be taken away from you. If you can bring knives in I'd make it as small and useless as possible. I know of a case where a guards pocket knife was taken from him and used against him. Stick to pepper spray or whatever is issued and follow policy to the letter.

Re: Anyone that have experience as jail deputy
A couple important things to remember when dealing with convicts/inmates are:
1. Be Fair, Firm & Consistent
2. Praise in public, criticize in private. (when possible, and most times it is possible)
But, the Cardinal rule when dealing with inmates is to at all times, be Professional.
Always better to be a tight screw, than a loose screw.
A heckuva lot easier to loosen up a bit, as opposed to having to tighten down.
Just always, always be Professional.
* Know that **** Policy book like the back of your hand. Because most of them do....

Re: Anyone that have experience as jail deputy
I worked as a jail deputy for about 3 and a half years. It was one of the worst jobs I've ever had. I went in thinking that it was going to be a career for me, but it ended up nearly breaking me. I blame most of that on the screwed up shift schedule they had us working on as well as a crappy jail administrator. I was usually lucky if I got 4 hours of sleep when I got off. Depending on your locality, they might not be too picky hiring people. I know mine wasn't. Out of a crew of 7 or 8, there were probably 2 people I could depend on if something happened. You're going to work with people that will likely end up being more of a liability than a help. You're going to see a lot of things that just don't make sense. Our justice system works for the most part, but there's still a lot of prejudice in the system. You're going to see the same people over and over again, because they're pretty much trapped in a hopeless situation. You're going to see a lot of people with mental health problems because hospitals can't, or won't take them.
MacLaren's list is pretty much spot on. I know a lot of people that would have done well to follow it. One of my coworkers refused to say "Thank you" or "You're welcome" to inmates, because as he said, "They're not welcome to anything". They also used to hassle him more. I'd also say, don't be afraid to apologize. I brought some baggage in to work with me one day, and it led to me getting into an argument with one of the inmates. After cooling down a bit, I realized I had been a jackass, and I went in there and apologized. Sometimes it just pays to admit that you were wrong.
The jail I worked in was a weapons free facility, as were most of the jails I visited. Knives, guns, and pepper spray were all locked up at the entrance, or in the case of an inmate transport, locked in our trunk. You're always outnumbered, so it's best not to give inmates another tool to kill you.

Re: Anyone that have experience as jail deputy
Absolutely. I dreaded day shifts most of all, because the administrator would come in, and rather than motivating people first thing, he would just dump on us. There was never any sort of encouragement, or positive reinforcement. He would come in annoyed, make everyone miserable, and send us on our way.
My breaking point was when a deputy got caught smuggling in cell phones to a couple of inmates, and he was just forced to resign. That's a major safety hazard for everyone that worked there, and they just swept it under the rug. When you can trust the inmates more than you can trust the guys working with you, it's time to go.

Wow. I hate to hear of incidents like that.
Don't blame you one bit for leaving. That was a no win situation. Life is much too short to try and hang on in a place like the one you described.

If I were going to carry a weapon, I'd for sure go ahead and carry my shield as well. Just have your shield in your wallet. Just my 2 pennies.

Re: Anyone that have experience as jail deputy
The LEOSA allows you to carry concealed across state lines, even when you are not on official government business. However, you still have to follow Federal regulations, as well as regulations on magazine size, type of weapon, etc. You also have to follow any rules put forth by private property owners, and you're required to have a photo ID issued to you by your department as well. Just a shield won't do, since anyone can get their hands on those. Your sheriff's office may also have rules that don't allow off duty officers to carry a firearm, though from what I've read, that may only apply to your issued sidearm. It's still probably best to follow your departments procedures though.nikolasga20 wrote:Also I hear there is a law call LEOSA hr218 under that law any law enforcement includes correctional deputy can carry firearm no license in all us states can someone give me more info on that and also what firearm is ideal for off duty carry I have smith Wesson mp9c compact

As for handcuffs, that's likely up to your department policies as well. In anything but the most extreme circumstances, they probably don't want their jail deputies making arrests outside jail facilities.
Are you still in school, or have you already applied to any agencies?
