No Sage 2 Love?

#1

Post by Teephud »

Hi,
New to the forum, and just returning to Spyderco. I have an early Clipit Delica, I bought in the early '80's. Now after being on the Benchmade bandwagon for a few knives, have decided to get another Spyderco. After much deliberation, I ordered a Sage 2 from BladeHQ. Finally shipped today, and while I'm eagerly awaiting it's arrival, I'm having some buyer's remorse. I had done some research, and found it got pretty good reviews, but now that I stumble on this forum I can't even find one post on it... Kinda wish I had ordered a Para 3...

Excellent knife, it got a lot of love when new. It's just a few years old and there are so many great options in this size range that it isn't the new hotness anymore but I certainly wouldn't have buyer's remorse.

Over many years of collecting knives, I have come to the conclusion that the Sage ll is my most cherished. I just purchased my third one, for back up to my back up. :) I put my CR small insingo back in the box,to either sell or one of my Sons will inherit.

Sometimes Spyderco are their own worst competition. Personally I'd take a Mantra over the Sage 2 because of the blade and edge length, but I do prefer the Sage's ergonomics. If I remember right this was one of the first titanium frame locks Spyderco produced wasn't it?

David, you might be right, that its the first titanium frame lock. Looking in one of my Spydie packs I noticed I have a Chokwe framelock as well. Can't remember when it came out though.

I'm fairly sure there was a titanium Military before it but I'm pretty sure the Sage 2 was at least one of the first. I can't remember if the Chokwe came before or after either.

Regardless I consider the Sage 2 to be a sort of budget Sebenza. My only real complaint would be the lack of an over travel stop on the lock bar and I prefer a steel lock insert/face. Neither of those things would stop me from buying and using one.

Thanks for all the feedback. It's good to see there is some love for this blade. I can't wait to check it out. If only I had ordered faster than the "free" shipping...

Welcome to the forum Teephud! Plenty of love for the Sage 2 here! It's my favorite of the Sage series by far.

Not sure why you couldn't find anything here on the Sage 2. Hang around awhile and you'll see pics and mention of it here and there.

Here's a recent thread....

BTW, the Para 3 is great too. I carried mine today in fact. I like folders with blades around 3" so both the Sage and Para 3 are winners in my book.
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!

You have nothing to regret. Both the Para 3 and Sage 2 are great knives but I prefer the handle ergos and deep carry clip of the Sage.

Flat & deep in my pocket were definitely considerations for me. I'm stoked. Can't wait for it to get here!
Btw, remnar, not sure what kind of science experiment you got going on there, but that looks interesting...

The Sage design is spectacular to begin with, in that it's very simple and well done. It's not showy or flashy, but just works. The Sage 1 was popular, and the Sage 5 seems to be doing well, but the Sage 2 is probably my favorite overall in the lineup because of its simplicity. I love that about my Techno as well, but the Sage 2 is even simpler with a better blade (thickness), better handle ergos, and simpler construction (standoffs vs. backspacer). I don't have a Sage 2 yet, but if I have any choice that'll be the next Sage that I acquire.
Aside: The Sage design in general is, to me, a paradigm of Spyderco design, with a choil and a leaf-shaped blade. The same could be said of the Chaparral, as it's essentially just a smaller Sage anyways. The other paradigm would be, of course, the Delica, with its drop-pointy blade shape and no-choil handle. The Para 2 is a combination of both; drop point with a choil.
