first PM2, I cant tell if tis a fake

#1

Post by para-para-paramilitary »

Hey Everyone, I just bought my first Spyderco and its a paramilitary 2, fully blacked out model. I got it off Amazon, not a third party seller.
apparently there has been a lot of counterfeits floating around and I was hoping you guys could share your expertise on the subject. Much appreciated!!@

It came with out a white paper note
The spyderco logo on the blade is quite shiny.

The shape of the kick and location of Eric's signature are not quite the same as mine. The thumb ramp seems a little off, too, but it's hard to tell from a

Can you give us a picture of the thumb ramp with the knife closed?

Looks legit. The jimping looks fine and the small tab by the compression lock is slightly rounded. Many fakes have this portion of the scales as a square-ish cut. Also, the cut out to access the lock is rounded and smooth, unlike the abrupt corners on the fakes.

It looks genuine to me. Of note is the area you circled right by the plunge. The bevel has that "J" shape indicating it was sharpened by the newer robotic method they've started using in Golden.

Next time just buy from a more reputable dealer and you won't have to worry about it.

Wanna be sure? Return it to Amazon and buy one from Blade HQ, Knife Center, Cutlery Shoppe, etc etc.

Looks good to me, but this is 100% correct. Buy from a reputable dealer every time to be sure

Looks good to me too - but weight it. I think fakes tend to not weigh true.

I get very confused whenever reading one of these posts, and there are a ton of them here and on other forums.
How much is actually saved when buying like this??
Retail at one of the trusted dealers is ~ $120. What price would tempt someone to take a shot on getting a fake??
$110?? $100??
Just curious, because I can't see taking that risk to save enough $ to buy a pack of cigarettes.
Would like to know what the OP paid for his knife, just to satisfy my curiosity.

I bought a Spyderco from Amazon; just once! That was before I knew what was going on with fakes being returned to Amazon and then subsequently being sold.

Yup!! I just bought a Caly there today, only because the members here vouched for it. First time purchasing from Amazon.
On the page before checkout there was a notice that a lot of these have been returned for some reason. First time I saw a notice like that. Forgot to take a screen shot of it, but that just reinforces my trepidation in regards to buying knives there.
For $103 it was very hard to resist though!

Got it. Anyone else get a weird feeling reading that warning??
Anyone ever see something like this before??
Curious as to reasoning behind this.

I've never bought knives from Amazon Joe so I couldn't tell ya! The last batch they had for 103 all looked legit from the members here who got them though. I paid full price for mine last October.
