Witness the results of a fairly well known S30V knife with magic heat treat vs plastic, used in a non abusive fashion. The damaged part is almost thumbnail size. The second chunk was done later after said knife was put into the junk/pry pile. I also had a PM2 that chipped pretty bad with a few chunks as deep as the entire edge bevel from contacts with bone. I took that knife all the way down to a new bevel on a Norton flattening stone and after that it stopped chipping. I was so disappointed with the PM2 that after loosing it I instantly bought another :) :) . I have been very pleased with the second PM2 and a Millie in S30V.
Not my intention to bash the maker, sure it was a one off and if I wasn't too darn lazy to mail it in they would fix/replace it. Just find it pretty darn fascinating!

Some of those "plastic" ties have a steel core.
My thoughts as well. Leatherman Squirt with the pliers / wirecutters is a good bet, but if you're going to cut them its best to do a straight push cut on a hard surface if its possible.
Crazy edge damage either way. Only hard blade failure I've had was an pinel #12 that had a bad head treatment. The edge crumbled apart like it was made out of silly putty...I've got pictures somewhere....
I read "chipped" then I scrolled down to the picture.....
That's not a chip, my friend- that is a full sized drainage culvert you can walk through..... Ooooh. Nasty.
Warhammer 40000 is- basically- Lord Of The Rings on a cocktail of every drug known to man and genuine lunar dust, stuck in a blender with Alien, Mechwarrior, Dune, Starship Troopers, Fahrenheit 451 and Star Wars, bathed in blood, turned up to eleventy billion, set on fire, and catapulted off into space screaming "WAAAGH!" and waving a chainsaw sword- without the happy ending.
That particular company will stand behind that knife and will warrantee it. That is rare, but I have seen that happen before, but not on that brand. Anything man made can have flaws from time to time. One bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch. Send it in, they will make it right. They are a stand up company.

Just being able to create a thin hard blade is an achievement in itself. We've come a long way from sharp rocks. The downside is that prying or twisting will more often than not break the thinnest part of the blade.
I had something similar happen with S30V - though not that large of a chip. I then read a few other instances of it happening on other knives in S30V. Granted it was in the early days of S30V and it was chalked up to companies/makers trying to get the combination of heat treat & blade geometry right. Regardless I've been a bit leery of S30V since then.
