Suggest me a knife

#1

Post by AlanC101 »

I am in the market for a new Spyderco, I can not really decide what to get. I am looking for something in the 3.0 to 3.6 inch blade range. I normally carry a Sage 1, or a 3 inch blade. I currently do not own a pm2, however I did have one in the past and gifted it to my cousin. I felt the blade to handle ratio was off and the handle thickness was too much for me, however considering giving it another try. I am also looking at spydiechef, endura 4 wave, para 3, sage 5.

I'd suggest the Sage 5

GB2 is pretty much my default suggestion.

I'll just say I wish I had gotten a Stretch sooner. It's much better than I expected. If you can find one in Hap40, all the better.

The Stretch is a great choice, 3.5 inch blade with choil, and the handle to blade ratio is close; also it has great ergonomics and carries well in pocket, not too thick. Some claim that it is Sal Glesser's favorite :spyder:

The Manix 2 in any iteration is another awesome Spydie. Made in the USA, and offered in a variety of Sprint runs.

You mentioned blade to handle ratio, check out the Mantra. It's just about as balanced as you can make a folder.

Sage 5 is on my want list for 2017.

I have owned both gb2 and mantra in the past. Right now I own Sage 1 and 2 dragon fly, delica, delica g10, ukpk and salt 1 because i live near the Everglades in sfl. Is the g10 stretch worth the price?

If you like the Stretch 2 design changes. A FRN Stretch 2 is dropping later this year if you can wait and prefer FRN.

I would recommend a Pacific Salt with the fully serrated edge. Great knife to have in wet and humid conditions.

I would recommend a manix 2 LW s110v. I have carried mine in the ocean and rivers several times. It will not rust if you rinse it with clean water. It is super light and the steel hold an edge forever.

The stretch in FRN is another favorite and they are available at Bento Box shop if you want to find one.

Based on the list you already have, and the fact that you live in a pretty humid climate, SpydieChef would get my vote.

Of your original want list, Sage 5 is my favorite, but you already have a Sage, so the only reason I see to get one would be if you want to add a compression lock to your collection. (Which is a perfectly good reason...)

I love my Sage 5, but haven't yet handled a SpydieChef. Here's a good review:

Native5 in any flavor or Caly3.5

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

Have you ever had a Manix2 LW? Hank is right about S110v.

Spydiechef is pretty awesome, but I'd go with the Slysz Bowie if you can afford it.

I just ordered a Para3. I also recently got a Mantra that I really like; the flipper action has broken in nicely and it is as smooth as butter. The Stretch is another good design in that blade length. Finally, there is a Caly 3 in HAP40 sprint coming up that might be worth waiting for.

I ended up with sage 5. I really love the sage 1 so the idea of having another one with compression lock was hard to pass up. Thanks for the suggestions!
