Paramilitary 2 question
Greetings all,
Hi my name is Rob and I am a Spyderco-holic. No, I don't want help, no matter what my bank account says.
Now that is out of the way, let me ask this question.
I own two Paramilitary 2's, one of the blurple line, one in black G10 with a satin blade.
The reason behind my confusion is that I thought at some point, approximately 1 year ago, I recieved an email from Spyderco saying that the G10 they were running was super aggressive, more so then usual. All I have to reference was the g10 on blurple model, which was no where in the same league as aggressive.
After a few times of pulling the black one out of my pocket, my jeans were shredded. I now have it in a leather sheath, and the aggressive g10 is doing a number on that.
Before I sand down the g10, I was just wondering if anyone else had heard of this or is my mind really that shot.
Thank you all for courtesies

Re: Paramilitary 2 question
For a certain batch I believe they used a more aggressive textured g10 by mistake. I remember it in the Spyderco byte email as well.

"Para Military 2 Production Deviation
It’s no secret that the Para Military 2 is one of Spyderco’s most popular and in-demand products. Since its introduction in 2010, we have worked extremely hard to increase our production of it and, particularly since the opening of our new factory facility last year, have made great progress toward that end.
Although we are now producing more Para Military 2s than ever before, we recently ran into an unexpected problem. After machining a large batch of G-10 scales for the Para Military 2, we peeled off the protective top layer and discovered that the texture of the material we received was coarser than the G-10 we normally use. We had this same experience in our production of the scales for the Yojimbo 2. Unfortunately, by the time we realized this, we already had a significant inventory of machined scales for these models on hand.
After careful consideration of all the options, we decided the best course of action was to maintain our manufacturing stride and temporarily fulfill the ongoing demand for these models using the coarser G-10 material. This material is made to the same exacting quality standards as the G-10 we typically use, it just has a somewhat coarser texture pattern. To give you an idea of the difference, here’s a close-up photo of a standard G-10 scale next to the coarser one.
[pic here]
This temporary situation resulted in the production of a few hundred each of C81GP2 Para Military 2 with satin finished blade and the C81GPBK2 Para Military 2 with black blade with the coarser G-10 scale texture. It also produced several hundred C85GP2 Yojimbo 2s with the same scale material. These knives are being released into our distribution network in exactly the same way as the standard versions of these models and are currently shipping.
We have now reestablished our supply of G-10 with the standard texture and all current and future production will continue to use that material.
Just as we learned when we were kids, honesty is the best policy. And at Spyderco, that’s our only policy. Thank you for your understanding and patience during this temporary deviation."

Re: Paramilitary 2 question
Hmm I feel like they should have not used the coarse G10 scales even if it meant they lost a lot of money and couldn't keep up with the demand temporarily. I would certainly have been incredibly disappointed if I got a PM2 that had a faulty scale when I paid the same price.Skywalker wrote:March 2016 Byte, for anyone looking -

Re: Paramilitary 2 question
I just ordered a Paramilitary 2 last night. I joined the forum this morning and was greeted with this post. I wonder if all of the "coarser models" have cleared the shelves or are still currently be distributed? Curious as to whether the coarser G-10 will become a collector's item?
Re: Paramilitary 2 question
Meh... nothing "faulty" about it. The blue/M390 PM2s had the same coarser G10, and trust me they work just fine.FreelanceForty wrote:

It's just different, and they like keeping people abreast of small changes like that.

Re: Paramilitary 2 question
Thank you for all the responses. Guess it depends on how many were made this way to see if it will become considered a collector's item.
Skywalker, thank you for the info about the M390 being more aggressive than the stock ones. I wonder if all sprints/exclusives will be like that?

Re: Paramilitary 2 question
I certainly wouldn't call it faulty. Just a little more "grippier" than usual. Personally, I would prefer if they used the coarse G10 vs what they normally use. I've seen some folks complain that textured G10 tears up their clothes and I agree that it can over time. I actually find that the bi-directional texturing on the FRN/FRCP handles is actually way more abusive to my pockets than any textured G10 that I have, and I love it! The "grippier" the better as far as I'm concerned!FreelanceForty wrote:Hmm I feel like they should have not used the coarse G10 scales even if it meant they lost a lot of money and couldn't keep up with the demand temporarily. Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!
Re: Paramilitary 2 question
They are not; here's the M390, CTS-204P, S35VN, and a regular S30V - only the M390 has the coarser G10, the others are all the usual "medium" texture.Username827 wrote:Thank you for all the responses.
