Native 5 different than picture - Help

#1

Post by theskyiscrying »

Hi,
I just got my first Spyderco, a Native 5. I read a bunch of reviews and chose that over the Delica4. I know I could not have gone wrong with either one, but in the end, Made in USA and the steel differences won me over.

I ordered it from the big A online and got it last night and noticed that it is put together differently than what's shown on the Spyderco site. Is this how the latest generation is made or is mine "special"?

My Knife:

Notice how the pins/screws don't go all the way through and one of them is a pin, not a screw.

thanks for the insight!

The picture they have posted is the more expensive g10 version, yours is the lightweight FRN version.

Hey there Skyiscrying, great name it's one of my fave blues songs.

It turns out you purchased the Light Weight version of the Native 5. I'm sure you'd be able to return the knife as its not what you meant to order. But something to be mindful of.

That makes sense, and thanks for the clarification.

I'm good with it, just wanted to know why it was different. I wanted the lightweight version.

The weight difference is substantial between the two. Congrats on the new knife. The LW Native is a lightweight but sturdy performer. The G10 version is great too but it is heavy for its size. Enjoy!

Make sure you paid the lightweight price and not the more expensive g10 version price.

HI theskyiscrying,

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum.

Actually, all the Native 5 models are shown on Spyderco's website. Go to the website from a PC, type in "Native 5" in the search box. The search results will show you all the versions currently available and some discontinued models. You can then click on each to see the details & description. You can do this from your phone too but the mobile site doesn't show a couple of the models for some reason.

Enjoy your Native 5 FRN! It's one of my favorite knives.

Hi Sal,
I love it so far. Everything is done nicely and I'm sure it will give me many years of super use.

Thanks for inquiring as it's important for someone in your position to get first hand knowledge from the actual consumer. You and your team have certainly made an impact on the knife market and make excellent products. My only regret is that with this first one, I may have been "spyder bitten" and this will probably not be the last Spyderco knife I purchase :D

That's a great knife! Bought one for my father in-law last year.

Personally...after holding the G10 and the FRN Lightweight one I prefer the cheaper model. Besides being lighter it just feels better in my hand but I do prefer FRN so take that with a grain of salt. :)

I can't really say anything BAD about the Delica, it just doesn't fit my hand size very well so I definitely would have gone the same route as you and picked the Native out of those two.

That said, the Delica is still a great knife as is VG10 a great steel. If the finger grooves were either removed or spaced out further so they fit my hand, it would be a very hard choice for me between these two knives. The Delica is the knife that brought me to this forum, but the Native was my first Spyderco so they're both kinda special to me.

Welcome to the Forum!

First time I heard, "The Sky is Crying," it was sung by the late Stevie Ray Vaughan... a beautiful song performed by a most outstanding musician.

Congratulations on your Spyderco Native 5 FRN! The Spyderco Delcia 4 is a nice choice as well.
