I find that few digital cameras capture the same feel as film B&W does.

Not to knock black & white images made on a digital, I just shot way too many rolls of Plus X and Tri X to be completely satisfied with digital monochrome.
Agreed! My comment was in regards to black and white photography in general, but especially 35mm film. I still prefer the fun and results of film photography. One reason I bought a digital SLR was because film was starting to get harder to find, the selection of what was available was getting smaller, and/or it was getting harder to find someone to develop it... also, the digital SLR I have provides full-frame/35mm capability, which was a big selling point for me.
I used to love Agfa Scal b&w transparency film. I was lucky enough to have a Leica (pre mortgage, pre kids etc etc) and the tonality through the Leica glass was just lovely - and far exceeded my capabilities to exploit it!
Leicas are very nice!

Nice tries at that! And, the more you try, the better you get.

The beautiful thing about photography is that although you learn from trying, there'll always be something else to try and learn from.

Travis, What breed of dog is she? We have a dog that was suppose to be pure bread blue healer but he is definitely not. His features look a lot like your dog, other than the coloring.

Nice sunset shots! The first one with the heron silhouetted in flight is very nicely done... seems you were in the right place at the right time and were able to get the camera up and focused for the shot. I also like the bottom photograph with the flowers taken against the sunset background... I like your subject formatting idea in this picture, and nice that you were able to get the stamens and/or pistils of the flower on the right to stand out.

Are these pictures taken with you holding the camera, or are you using a tripod or bracing yourself and/or the camera against something?

Did you have to adjust the ISO to pull the shot off, or was the camera automatically making ISO adjustments for you?

And, isn't the 50mm f/1.8 a wonderful lens? :) A 50mm f/1.4 is faster, but there's just something about the f/1.8 that's sweet. My best luck with a 50mm f/1.8 was with a manual lens on a film camera... beautiful lens until my camera fell from the top of a luggage cart at an airport and it landed lens first on the floor. :( Although the camera was damaged (now repaired), I wasn't sure if the lens got damaged... and, now I've unfortunately misplaced that lens, darn it! Nowadays, I go with a 50mm f/1.4 autofocus on a full-frame digital SLR camera, although I still have and love my older film SLRs and manual lenses. :)

By the way, some DSLRs can use manual lenses... you just have to "program" that information into the camera, depending on the DSLR you have. Yes, you have to manually focus the lens and adjust the f-stop, but that can add to your overall photography experience and give you a wonderful taste of using older technology with the convenience of newer technology.

Nikon and Pentax are the only backward compatible lens mounts that I'm aware of. I was bummed that the Minolta MC/MD glass wasn't compatible with A mount, but I got over it ;) Now I get my vintage glass fix with either my micro 4/3 camera or old film SLRs.

My iso was at 100 on those shots.

The 50 1.8 is absolutely my favorite lens. I only have 3 to choose from but I usually always grab the 50. I'm going to be going to Disney with the girlfriend Monday and can't wait to do some "street" photography with it. I also hope I can take out the 70-300 and finally give it a go.

I believe you'll find the 70-300mm to be a fun lens to use.

In terms of backwards compatible lenses. I have a few M42 threaded lenses that I use on my Canons, with the appropriate lens adapter. The lens adapters run for around $10 each for the metal ones and you can get remarkably quick glass for very cheap on ebay by going this route. I've got a 28mm f/2.8 that I really love to shoot on and a 135mm f/2.8 that can be a real blast with the right conditions. You adjust the f-stop on the lens and adjust your shutter speed on the camera. I shoot in either aperture priority and adjust what stop the camera is shooting at based on my lighting condition or just shoot full manual.

This is what the adapter rings look like:

And here are two pictures I took along The Peak to Peak Highway this past Saturday.

This one was taken with my Canon 55-250 STM

This one was taken on the 18-55 IS kit lens with an ND filter. It's a little dark, I think I need to bring the exposure up just a little
