I guess as long as the subject is here, discussion is always possible.
I've got and carry protos of CF pieces quite often. I really like CF (being a F1 junky & all).
Steven, Most of us get our CF from the same sources, when you say quality, do you mean CF finish or acccesssories, like gold pins, etc? In terms of function like lock reliability and strength (toughness), I don't think we're lacking.
I guess first would be what model? We've done "sprints" in Ladybug, Dragonfly, Cricket, Civvie, Police and Delica models. We're talking to a good customer about a SUA made Native "exclusive".
What model(s) catch your fancy?
What finish between; shiny, bead blasted or grippy like the G-10 we use? Keeping in mind the most grip, (like G-10) makes the CF look like a lighter colored G-10, making the CF difficult to see.

Hi Sal,
My standard for great-looking CF has always been the CF used in your original Swiss-made Walkers.
As I look at my CF models, there seems to be more of a problem with chipping around the screws in the shiny models, if that makes any sense.
I too would love to see a more matte finish in the future.
Dave

Glad to hear the CF Native may become a reality, Sal. Still think the Calypso Jr. done up in CF with dual skeletonized liners to eliminate the "handedness" issue, would be both a great collectors piece and very close to my vision of the "ultimate" for EDC. Other models that would appeal to me in CF would be the Jester and the bolstered Kiwi. The Pro-Grip, in CF with a Jester/ATR like forward finger ramp, would also be very appealing. I'd also love to see the JD Smith and C34 Horn return with CF and dual liners, but realize that there are probably more issues involved in doing this with a "collaboration" model than with one of the in-house designs. Finally, I recently acquired an "R" and a very impressed by the feel of it. Think a solid bladed, full flat ground, CF version with dual skeletonized liners and a 14mm hole would make one totally awesome and quite practical EDC.

Well, I just lost out on a CF Native...but perhaps not! Sal, I think its time for those sprint runs on CF Natives! I'll take an SE and PE for the collection and another set for EDC. As for the overall question...I like the shiny CF like the Walker I have, however, 'bead-blasted' sounds interesting...are there any pics of what CF bead-blasted looks like? Also, any possibility of the steel being H1 or what would it be if put into production??? Let us know...thanks!
I don't really care how matte'ed/grippy the finish is, but more importantly the chipping/cracking should be fixed as swede said.
I am all for F1 styling CPM S30V blade, CF Scales, Ti Liners/lock, tapped on all 4 corners for the clip, and a Cobra hood. Maybee the Milie but called the Officer or General etc... gold trim might then be appropiate. but remember no cigarette sponsers on the scales

Sal,sorry to have brought this subject up if it is a touchy one.
I would love to see either a mat finnish CF in the Military or the Native.
I just got a little neck knife with red cf or really more of a burgandy. It looks great a little color with out being overbareing.
I will try to get a good pic that shows the color in the CF well.
If a Military or Native is done a Mat finnish IMO would look better.
and here is a couple pics,it may be just me but I think a Native would look great with this CF.

I like the gel-coat finish as it is used right now, for sprints. The surface cracking issues could be a problem of how holes are drilled into the CF, or maybe over-tightening of screws. You almost need to have a CF model in regular production just for the manufacturing experience I think.
I'd like to see a CF Dodo or a CF Paramilitary.

I wonder if G10 is actually better suited to hard-use knives than CF, being less brittle if also less stiff. So I'm not sure that we're actually getting a real world performance advantage from CF in terms of our real world use with knives. (As another F1 junkie I still love the stuff though. )
I think that the structural weak point with most knives is the pins, not the slabs or use of liners. If we can get rid of the pins and have monocoque handles, then we might see a real advantage to CF.
Though I find it a little strange about G10 use is that everyone seems to use the basic E-glass form of G10, which is really inteded for electrical applications. Spyderco of course uses custom G10, I don't know if it is S-glass or E-glass based.

Hey Sal, I'm some what a F1 junkie myself. How about that Michael Schumacher, looks like he's going to win another championship. I miss the Ayrton Senna years, that's what got me hooked! I want to try CF on a knife but it's to pricey compared to G-10, and macarta. It's used in F-1 cars and road racing motorcycles, and probably other motor sports vehicles. It's tough light, and pretty, so it is a great knife handle material. RKBA!

Sal, I just meant the finish of the CF.
A Calypso Jr with a finish like that in my pic would make it a really beautiful and functional EDC.
