Wandering about in the woods
Re: Wandering about in the woods
You are one lucky man Remnar! You live in a beautiful area.
And yes, it does look like the sign says DEADMAM LAKE.

Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!

The funny thing about the sign is that all of the information about the lake that I've seen call it Deadmans Lake, and I didn't even notice the spelling on the sign until I uploaded the pictures. I wonder if it was an innocent mistake or if someone thought they were being funny.
Re: Wandering about in the woods
Today was the last day of my summer job, so today I'm posting a special edition of wandering. I've worked for a program called White Pass Discovery Team for seven or eight seasons now. The Discovery Team works in conjunction with the Forest Service to provide work opportunities in the forest for local high school kids. I am one of the crew leaders that takes a team of seven teens into the field each day to do a variety of jobs. I'll let the pictures do the talking.
Working on the roads: Brushing roads and bridges, and cleaning culverts.
Before
After
Looking over one of the bridge decks that we cleaned.
Checking out a falls that was along the road.
Working at the seed orchard which mainly consists of maintaining the fence.
The view from the upper orchard.
Pruning white pine to help prevent blister rust.
Doing some trail maintenance.
Before
After
This culvert is completely clogged and the trail is eroded.
Job well done!
Teamwork!
Another tree in the trail.
On my last day working at Mt. St. Helens I decided that the trail to Spirit Lake really needed some work.
Taking a break to soak in the beauty.
Back to work!
I had these with me everyday in the field.

Re: Wandering about in the woods
Today I took my son to Ape Cave. This was the first time for both of us and it was a little challenging at times for my son. Ape cave is the third longest lava tube in the U.S. at about 13,042 feet long. The entrance splits the cave into two sections. The lower portion is about an eighth of a mile long and was relatively easy to hike. After following the cave back to the entrance we continued to the much longer and much more difficult upper portion of the cave. Along the upper portion there are many large rock piles, or breakdown, that you must climb over along with an 8 foot lava fall that has ropes to assist you in scaling it. Almost all of the cave is pitch black so we took plenty of flashlights and extra batteries which we did use. I brought a camera with us only to discover that I forgot to put a memory card in it so the pictures that I got were taken with my phone and the difficulty of taking pictures in a cave limited the number of photos. :)
A shot of my son at the lower end of the cave.
Here's a shot looking up at the ceiling.
The upper portion has a couple of skylights. This was the first natural light that we saw in over a mile.
Resting under the skylight. Notice the wood debris that has fallen into the cave.
Near the upper end of the cave there is another skylight with a ladder so you can exit and return to the beginning above ground.
Here's the hole from which we emerged.
We didn't see any cave spiders but this spyder made the journey with us.
An old lava flow.
Basalt rocks, a big crack, and more scenery.

Today I hiked to the location of an old fire lookout. It's about 3.5 miles to the top and about 2900 feet of elevation gain with a maximum elevation just under 6000 feet. I tried to get more knife pics this time but my lousy camera had a hard time focusing.
South Point Trailhead.
The Tasman rides along on my pack.
A few shots of the trail.
There were some trees down in a few places.
Ironically, the dead trees with the bark stripped away are the result of a fire that occurred just below the fire lookout.
Approaching the top.
I made it!
Time to sit down and take a break.
The lookout tower is gone but there is a radio tower used by the forest service.
Delica with Mt. Adams.
Chokwe with Mt. St. Helens.
One last shot of Goat Rocks.

Re: Wandering about in the woods
I headed back to St. Helens yesterday to explore a trail that I hadn't yet hiked. The trail ended up having impassable wash outs so I returned to a more familiar trail. I hope the same old scenery isn't getting too boring for everyone.
St. Helens
Hood
Like most days, I'm hiking Solo today. :D
Adams
You can see the trail running horizontally about half way up this hill. This portion had some minor washouts that were passable.
I was also carrying my Chap 2.
And this little guy.
More scenery
My favorite shot of the day.

Re: Wandering about in the woods
Yesterday we hiked up to Pinnacle Peak. This was our second attempt in two weeks because the first time we had a lightning storm blow in on us. Trying to climb up steep wet rocks in the open inside of a storm cloud is no bueno. Today we had much better weather.
A few pics on our way up.
Looking back at Mt. Rainier with Paradise lodge and visitor center below.
Started up the rocks and decided it was a good photo op.
Made it to the top.
My pathetic attempt at a selfie. BTW This is why they call it a hawkBILL, right?
I kept having this weird feeling that I was being watched.
Castle
"Hey, you can see my house from here." -Brian
Looking over the edge at the trail we came up.
After finishing our hike, we decided to get some refreshments at the Paradise lodge.
This little buck was hanging around outside the lodge.
Looking up at Pinnacle Peak (peak in the middle) from Paradise.
Myrtle Falls
One last shot of Rainier as the clouds form and the sun starts to set.
Our plan next week is to climb to Camp Muir from Paradise. Wish us luck. :D

Re: Wandering about in the woods
I put in over 10 miles on Goat Creek trail today.
In the spring Cathedral Falls is quite magnificent. Not so much in August.
Looking from the other side you can see why this is called Cathedral Falls. The trail takes you behind the falls into the large opening in the overhanging cliff.
Manbug vs. Salamander
There are many cool little falls along Goat Creek but most are barely visible through the trees and brush.
There wasn't any problem seeing this little falls from the trail. :p
This was one of only a couple of spots that provided views of the surrounding hills.
A couple of knives with fungus.

Re: Wandering about in the woods
Congratulations murph! Watch out for the ferns along the trails over there in Hawaii. When my wife and I went , my shins were gradually rubbed raw on one long hike. It happened very slowly over the course of the hike so I didn't even notice until later when my shins felt like they were on fire. I recommend wearing long pants and I almost always wear long pants myself these days.murphjd25 wrote:Those are awesome boots! I absolutely love mine!
