Another Side of the Counterfeit Problem

#1

Post by wrdwrght »

Just went to old-school Kittery Trading Post (established in southern Maine in the 1930s) to trade a bunch of now-idle Spydies for a handgun I've had my eye on.

KTP purveys Spyderco products (among many other high-quality knife brands), and until recently took used Spydies in trade. But not anymore!

Word has reached KTP about the counterfeit problem, in particular, the Spyderco counterfeit problem. Our brand is the only one KTP will no longer buy or take in trade... Ouch!

Glad I didn't acquire my Spydies as an investment.

I bought a used spyderco at ktp in March, they had about 10 used ones. I will complain to them next time I go.

There are enough folks online who would gladly buy a Spydie for the right price, but its true - my own personal encounter with a fake Military has made me cautious, and I pretty much prefer to do all my trading with individuals when I can. Hope you didn't pass on the handgun as a result!

The Royal Canadian Mint, the issuer of the gold and silver maple leaf bullion coins, had a huge problem with counterfeit coins coming out of China. One of the reasons for this was the simplistic design on the coin and the coin's rather basic quality. One of the ways the mint addressed the counterfeit problem was to use a micro-engraved laser mark on the coin. The equipment to produce the very small laser mark is not cheap and so that slowed down the counterfeiters. Perhaps Spyderco might consider using a micro engraved laser mark inside of the bug on the blade. Here is an example of the laser mark used on a coin showing the year of the coin:

Understand the hesitation to take in used knives, kind of silly of them to fixate on one brand, considering you can buy counterfeits of pretty much every brand out there.

That's interesting. I was there recently. I like to stop in now and then to check out the used knives.

A follow-up bump. Went by the Kittery Trading Post's knife counter today to see what was in and found neither new nor used Spydies. And the KTP web site returns no hits for a search on "Spyderco". Very strange. Is this because a distributor burned KTP with counterfeits, or what?

I suspect that this has something to do with it.

Jeez, I'm gonna have to rethink where I shop (even though I've never bought a knife at KTP).

Even if KTP was upfront about selling clones of actual Spyderco knives, it was still trading on the good name that Spyderco has spent so many years building. Why buy a clone of a knife no one has heard of?

The irony to me is KTP's refusal to have accepted my used (and legit) Spydies last June because they didn't want to get burned with counterfeits.
