New Viele vs old Viele

#1

Post by Gizmo »

I'm looking at purchasing a C42 Viele plain edge but my usual source only has the older model (Aus-8 steel). I'm looking for any comparative advice on the "practical" differences between the two models.

Any points would be appreciated.

There are 4 main changes...
1. Blade steel is now VG10
2. Eccentric pivot pin
3. Back spacer now has two pins
4. Stop pin is flush with the "bolster"

Given the choice I would take the new version over the old, unless I got a really good deal.

Well, I only have experience with one knife from each of the different production styles. But given that experience I would say go for the newer one hands down. The older model I saw didn't look as nice due to the stop pin being screwed through the "bolster" and the lock went all the way to the opposite scale. One my new Viele, it is silky smooth, and **** near perfect in all production respects. I am very pleased with the upgrade, and don't think I would own the older model.

I've got two of the early models and one of the newer ones. I have carried and used the plain older one a lot and it still locks up perfect (about 1/3 across) it has not moved further since I bought it. I have not used my other prior model much, a serrated blade, butt it also stops about 1/3 across and no blade play. They are both silken openers.

The new model is preferrable due to the refinements and newer steel, butt the older model is still a Spydie and was my favorite before being upgraded. If you find a good price and the example is tight, then I say buy it.

As recent as last week some dealers are telling retailers that the Viele has been discontinued. They do not elaborate if they know what is going on, but this is dealers who was selling the VG10 version. This is giving the impression that the VG10 version is being discontinued. True??????? Since posting this I have learned from Spyderco that the VG10 version is the new one and the AUS8 is being discontinued.
