SpartanJohns thinks that 154CM is a much better steel than VG-10
He says it in this YouTube video: https://youtu.be/Kd0X_uO2JE8?t=6m31s

Can you please link the video so it's starts at 6:31?

So long as steels are heat treated properly, there is no best steel. You simply pick the one that meets the criteria needed for the task at hand. If memory serves, I think 154cm takes an edge easier but doesn't hold it as long as VG-10. I prefer CPM154 over 154CM, RWL-34 is another similar steel which is quite good.

Yes, CPM-154 should be a little bit better than 154CM due to being a powder steel.Cujobob wrote:So long as steels are heat treated properly, there is no best steel. It's virtually indistinguishable in every day use. The most apparent difference is that one comes from the USA and the other from Japan.

I have knives with both steel alloys and I find both of them are great in their performance, their overall aesthetic looks, and their composition and resistance to rust, and, from my examination of the experiences of others with knives of both steel types, I find the same: Both and/or in different uses and enviroments.

Re: SpartanJohns thinks that 154CM is a much better steel than VG-10
If one manufacturer uses 154CM over all other steels, that comment could be interpreted to mean that he simply favors one brand over another brand.
As stated in this thread, it doesn't tell me what he thinks 154CM is actually better at than VG-10. Some people think the most stain resistant steel is the best, some think the toughest steel is the best, MOST think the highest wear resistance is the best, and some think the easiest to sharpen is the best.
I would think that if you had two identical knives (which might be the problem of everything here), it would be almost impossible for any normal person to tell the difference at all between those two steels. Jim has them ranked as category 6 (154CM) and 7 (VG-10) out of 9, so two or three steps above the bottom for wear resistance.
Don't forget, Spyderco isn't the only manufacturer using VG-10, other manufacturers seem to sell VG-10 as a very premium steel to the point where you might be paying $200 for a pretty normal knife with this premium steel. Other manufacturers might prefer to heat treat VG-10 at a much lower hardness, so it could perform pretty terribly on another knife.

After watching the video, he says it holds an edge longer (he agrees with Jim) and it is easier to get sharp.
Does he explain how he sharpens in any of his videos? I didn't see any sharpening videos listed.

Re: SpartanJohns thinks that 154CM is a much better steel than VG-10
What are the main strengths and weaknesses if you are comparing VG10 with 154?
Re: SpartanJohns thinks that 154CM is a much better steel than VG-10
I really can't tell much difference between them. They are both very easy to sharpen, corrosion-resistant, and take a wicked initial sharpness. I don't think the steels are significantly different enough to provide much measurable difference. Heat treat, blade shape, and quality of sharpening are probably the factors that people are experiencing.SpyderEdgeForever wrote:What are the main strengths and weaknesses if you are comparing VG10 with 154?
I have limited, but positive, experience with 154cm and several Spydercos in VG-10. Both are great in my opinion.

Coke or Pepsi seems to be the proper analogy. I've swapped to water myself though
Always been obsessed with knives... Is that some type of disease?
