Amsterdam Meet 2016 Report of Spyderco Prototypes
I just got back from the wonderful IWA Show in Germany; I tossed my laundry in a corner and fired up my computer to start finishing the pictures for my first posts. I’ll continue posting new prototypes in the next few days. Please feel free to re-post and share these images and information. If you’d like to edit these images, try to make it clear that these are either concept models, production prototypes or production samples. I add this information in the images, to make clear that these knives aren’t available yet. I’d also appreciate a source credit for the images. And if you’d like to use these images for commercial purposes, please contact me first.
I felt the 2016 Meet was a great success, thanks to Eric, Kelly, Joyce, Jur, Ted, Martien, Nemo and the rest of the Spydercrew back in Golden. They all contributed to a great event! I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be there and take some pictures and notes that I can share. Each meet is a very special event and I sincerely appreciate this opportunity to see the prototypes and to discuss them with the Spydercrew and fellow knifeknuts. Eric loves feedback, so don’t be shy to comment on the designs I can show you in this thread.
Eric shared a lot of information and background stories for each design. And Ted was a great help in collecting measurements and weights. Any mistakes in these descriptions are mine. If you attended the meet and picked up some other information on this and the other prototypes in this thread, please add that information to this thread.
Now, let’s start the show!

Spyderco 2016 Production Prototype – ATR
The ATR, or At The Ready, is back! The new ATR will have black G-10 scales and a regular hourglass-shaped clip. Other than that, all the familiar features are back, such as the: compression lock, divots/holes in the handle, ‘dagger’ ground blade, and the little hump near the tip. It will be released in a plain-edge only, but perhaps we’ll see a version with a SpyderEdge in the future.
I liked how the edges of the handle, and inside the holes, were nicely chamfered. The knife seemed a bit lighter than my Ti and SS ATR knives. I liked the new ATR a lot and I’ll likely add it to my collection. Even though the clip has changed, I found I could still handily perform rotations to change the grip with the ATR. Sorry for the mess on the handle, I couldn’t seem to brush off all those white particles before the photoshoot.
Specifications
Overall Length: 22 cm / 8.66 inches
Blade Length: 9 cm / 3.54 inches
Blade Thickness: 3 mm / 0.11 inches
Weight: 133 grams / 4.69 ounces

Re: Amsterdam Meet 2016 Report of Spyderco Prototypes
The only downside for me is the pocket clip.I was expecting a deep wire clip.

Spyderco 2016 Production Prototype – Brend/Pirela Mamba
The Brend/Pirela Mamba was unveiled last year, and Spyderco hopes to ship the first production run very soon. I gathered that an actual production run is in the works right now. The Mamba felt a lot lighter in the hand than I remembered. The blade deployed very well, using either the thumb hole or the flipper. Like I probably mentioned last year, the Mamba is a very impressive fistful of folder that I can’t wait to add to my collection!
Specifications
Overall Length: 24 cm / 9.44 inches
Blade Length: 10 cm / 3.93 inches
Blade Thickness: 4,5 mm / 0.17 inches
Weight: 183 grams / 6.45 ounces

Spyderco 2016 Production Prototype – Cara Cara 2 Titanium
The Byrds have proven to be reliable and affordable working knives. Since, they’ve been received well, I guess Spyderco decided to add some panache to the Byrd line with a nice titanium handle for the Cara Cara 2. The knife was very slim, and the smooth titanium handle felt good in my average XL sized hands.

It is interesting that there is jimping on the non lock side of the liner on the Mamba. I wonder why that is.
Also interesting that the Cara Cara Ti was shown at the meet since it has already been released and is available for sale.

Yes it was another great meet and thanks for all the great pictures! Looking forward to seeing more! :)
Re: Amsterdam Meet 2016 Report of Spyderco Prototypes
Hey Wouter, I have to ask: 4,76 inch blade lenght ?
Re: Amsterdam Meet 2016 Report of Spyderco Prototypes
The ATR looks great but I hope those holes in the handle get spaced out better on the production version, they're all over the place.

Thanks Mr. Blond for the pictures, narrative and of course the specifications.
Weird seeing a Japanese-made Spyderco with S30V instead of VG-10 but that's a welcome change to many.
