So I finally picked up a Civilian, (just so you guys are aware they retail for around $400 here in New Zealand) however, I was lucky to find a NIB model on the secondary market.
I must say, it is everything I have expected it to be.
I do however have a few questions about it. . .
1/ Why are there liners on only one side of the knife? Weight reduction & more slender profile?
2/ Is there any intention to re-boot, further develop or create a newer design?
Kind thanks, Nick.
At last the Civilian is mine!!!
Re: At last the Civilian is mine!!!
First of all congratulations on snagging a Civilian model
I own and love several of Spyderco's Reverse S blades>> I actually like the Matriarch a lot better than I do the Civilian because the Matriarch simply fits my hand better. But a Civilian model is a great investment if nothing else. I've heard that there are many places around the globe that Spyderco knives are extremely costly and I'm sorry you have to deal with that.
But I do encourage you to also give the Matriarch model a try>> and they also have a smaller version called the Lil Matriarch as well. Oh definitely keep your Civilian too but I do believe you'll find the Matriarch more user friendly as I did. Now if a guy has a really big hand then the Civilian might be the best one for you.

I remember reading that Sal was thinking about an updated civilian. I'm willing to bet it will be a few years though. Congrats on the new knife.

Hey, Nick:
Congrats on your Civilian. I hope it serves you well.
The single liner provides a foundation for mounting the clip screws--they need threaded steel for a solid anchor. A single liner keeps the knife as slim and light as possible, since it was originally designed for concealed/undercover carry.
As for a revision, I haven't heard anything that would indicate one is in the works.
Stay safe,
Mike

I'd like a Civilian with a wave - opener (a little post like the PKal would be dandy). Oh, and H1 steel.

Re: At last the Civilian is mine!!!
Thanks for the insight into the Civilian Mike. I guess I jumped the gun a bit on my post. I remember Sal saying something to the effect of a Civilian 2 but after finding his post I realize I read too much into it.
sal wrote:All open to discussion, and I must admit that the discussion did bring the question of a Civilian 2 design closer to the top of the list. I don't think I would change too much, just those issues that have come up over the past 30 years.

Thanks so much for the reply Mike.
I know this is gonna sound kinda weird, but I am a huge fan of your work and the Yo2 is my fave Spyderco, hence having 2 of them.
I actually rushed home from the gym to tell my girlfriend that you replied to my post.
Yeah, yeah. . .I sound like a real fanboy, but come on guys, this is MJ we are talking about.
Cheers, Nick.
