Hi guys

Do any of you own one of these?, and if so what ya think of em.

Im reading about this "carbide tip" that appears when you squeeze the handle.

So any of you have pics of this "carbide tip" in action.

Im not quite sure where this thing is meant to be, or meant to squeeze out of.

Thanx a mill

Mancer,

AS i understand it, the carbide tip is used for smashing windows and windshields of cars in teh case of an emergency (From the outside only???)

Again, as i understand it the tip is located inside the "butt end" of the knife and comes out when you squeeze the closed blade shut *further* from it's normally shut position.

The tip stays out as long as the pressure is there...release the pressure and the tip retracts back.

I hope this helps?

EDIT: made minor edit to correct english.

Have a great day,
Kaizer.

A door half open is a door half closed. But a knife half open is a knife fully closed.

aaaaahhhh...!! The Rescue "Assist"! My favourite Rescue of them all! The tip of this knife is ecliped like a scallop. It protruding tip acts as a contact mechanism to activate the carbide striker. Very CL idea! Tested the carbide tip on some used car window. It worked after two hard strikes. Have to wear gloves as a precaution.. The Assist has a rock-solid lock-up and the ergonomic handles are to die for! Check out the pix!

It'll be cool to pack this knife on a kydex holster for belt-carry.. Its a large knife!

Aloha my friend!

Great hearing from you, as I was beginning to wonder...

Yes, the carbide tip is and does what Sam said. Very handy in the vehicle provided you can get to it. I was thinking of getting one to replace my Rescue Jr. for facility shakedowns and just in case there is a fire and I gotta get out of the control station...

I don't know how well it can cut rope or whatever by squeezing it between the blade and the handle, but an interesting concept indeed!

Glad to have you back "home"! Thanks again for everything and God bless ya both!

Aloha,
Chad

Just FYI - the "window" breaker is meant to be used on side windows only - not on front or rear windshields. Usually these have to be cut out with some type of hand-held glass saw or pryed out...Most contain a laminate that prevents them from shattering where as the side windows are tempered...

Actually I "think" the concept is to be able to break the side glass in a car from either inside or out. Not by smashing it through but by applying steady hard pressure to the glass. I know it works with somthing as simple as a key, as I've done it in a few salvage yards back when I went to them. As long as the car is made post 80's or so it should have "saftey glass". It is made to shatter into millions of little pieces, you don't even need gloves!

one other thing: If you are trapped in your seatbelt it should be fairly taunt. This should ease with using the "pinch-cutting" method with this knife. Great Spyderco design!
Man I got to get a couple of these and go to the salvage yard

From my experience, it is the windshield only that has the laminated (and therefore shatterproof/carbide breaker proof) glass. If I remember correctly, you can use a window punch on the rear window.

Hello

Sorry to have been so quiet...been busy packing and getting myself and my boy to South Africa to visit Mancer. We are here now and waiting for his interview with the American Consulate so he can come over and we can actually get married. Thanks for your kind words Daywalker.

ADS,

My bad...You are correct...the back glass is usually tempered like the side and will shatter the same.

Thanx guys, I would think this is the king of all Rescue models.
I would hope if a rescue model had to be discontinued that it would be one of the other designs.

Cant wait to get one, they look amazing.
Thanx for the kind comments and support Daywalker.
Hope all is going well with you

take care

Just curious about another thing.
I see there is an "assist2", and it appears this 2nd model does not carry the carbide tip.
Any idea why the glass breaker was removed?, I would think this feature is what carrys this knife over the rest of the Rescue models.

If anyone has info on this please feel free to share.

thanx

I completly agree with you on that one.
The glass breaker is a brilliant thing to have in a blade of this type, this will be the ideal knife to carry on oneself in a vehicle.

The whistle would come in handy in certain situations though I suppose.

Just got my Assist

Brilliant brilliant, oh did I meantion its brilliant?

Nice BEEEG blade with about 1-2cm worth of plainedge on the tip.
The idea with cutting rope by putting the rope between the teeth and the finger grooves in the FRN handle WORK PERFECTLY!!!

Give a small amount of pressure on the finger groove cutouts on the spine of the blade and it slices cleanly through rope and even electrical cabling.

The Carbine tip that pops out the rear of the blade also looks really really interesting, and from what Ive read here it works quite well.

I think this would be the ultimate rescure model to be adopted by rescue personal.

Cheers
