52100 Military

#1

Post by Bodog »

Looking at the 2016 catalog the 52100 looks like it has either cladding or a very straight differential hardening line. Anyone else seeing the same thing?

Judging from the picture it appears to be a composite blade, but who knows how accurate that picture really is! The S90V/154cm Manix 2 doesn't appear to have a line through the blade, although it should. Also, the Rock Salt sprint says "VG-10" on the blade, even though it's H1. So I guess we'll have to wait and see!

I'm willing to bet one whole Canadian dollar that it's a composite blade.

Don't the composite blades normally have the other steel listed?

They normally do, I'm a bit confused on this one as well. I was really hoping for a solid blade.

same, I'm on the fence right now and a composite blade will definitely prevent me from buying one

It doesn't bug me as long as the cladding isn't super soft.

One of the main reasons I would be buying it would be for the patina "fun factor" so the cladding would kinda ruin that lol :D

Yea cladding definitely changes things for me, I'm with Spencer, I like the look of a good patina. I have visions of this millie looking like the SB caly after some use. Nothing like that well worn used look. Hoping we get some clarification on this one. I'll probably end up getting it either way though, I've been on somewhat of a millie kick lately and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Either way, I am in and fully excited.

But, definitely surprising to me if it is clad. Maybe too much corrosion around the pivot on a full solid blade?
Going back to Caly.

Looks like it is clad but it doesn't mention the steel so I hope this is a mistake and that the knife will be pure 52100 otherwise my interest will wane...

The tang doesn't list another steel but I also think that that is a computer generated image instead of a photo so who knows.

I would appreciate a clarification from Golden on this. It seems to be as important to some as it is to me and I really would like to know one way or another for sure. I guess we will know by the time the knife is actually released, but I hope we might get a clarification to know the facts.

Isn't it obvious, it is clad in S110V! Oh boy! That is gonna be sweet!

Maybe it is clad in 154CM like the Manix?

I don't understand it for a knife like this. If you're going to make a limited production sprint run, that is obviously catering to knife AFI's, who most likely understand how to take care of their knives, including steels that are prone to rust, then laminate blades make no sense to me. Then you turn around and see standard production knives like the Gayle Bradley knives that are solid M4 and will rust if you look at them wrong. It has to have something more to do with production cost than simply providing more corrosion resistance. It seems to me that the people who really are concerned with rust prone steels tend to not buy them at all, as opposed to jumping on board when the steel in question is laminated. The laminate ZDP blades really baffle me since that steel is fairly stain resistant, especially compared to Superblue or M4.

Couple of clarifications....
The 52100 CF Military Model is NOT a laminate. It is an issue with the image that makes it appear as such.
