New Spyderco for 2016: The Introvert Flipper

#1

Post by PM1 »

Spyderco has just announced they will be producing a new flipper design for 2016 called The Introvert. It seems as though it will be produced in Japan. The blade steel has not yet been announced, so I wanted to get the Spyderholics to weigh-in on which steel should be used to make this new design as appealing as possible. The MSRP is $315 and the street price is $189, so it is already priced at the high end of the Spyderco price spectrum, so bear this in mind when voting.

Since Japanese knives will be produced with Japanese steel, please choose your steels of choice to fit this requirement.

For the poll, pick your top 2 steels for the 2016 Introvert THAT WOULD MAKE IT MOST APPEALING TO YOU.

I voted Super Gold just because I have none in my lineup...good enough reason, eh?

Looks like a mid lock...interesting...seems like the open/close bias would be too great to overcome for a flipper?

however, looking more closely that may be a very rearward placed linerlock or perhaps a compression lock....either way, quite unique! :D

Maybe Mr. Blonde could check in & set the record straight on the lock type... :)

I'm adding this one just because it's so butt-ugly.... ;)

Nonetheless, looks like it has potential to be one of the most secure Spyders in the deployed position...not much chance of it closing on your hand...

That is unless that Spyder-Choil doubles as a cigar-cutter!!! :spyder:  :p

I'm assuming vg10 for regular production. Super gold has already been said to be too expensive. Being it's been announced Im also assuming its already being made or is atleast in the pipeline which means a steel is already chosen.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Super Gold said to be only too expensive for the Delica/Endura line? This is a much more expensive knife.

My understanding is that you won't see white steel used in large production runs.

I think VG10 makes the most sense considering the knife's intended application.

They can use plastic for all I care. My interest in this model is too small to be seen with an electron microscope.

Also, with all that sliding steel, and around your finger, I'm not sure about a full carbon steel on this one, as much as I love carbon on other knives.

How about an option for VG10 Laminated Super Blue. :D

Oh I see. I don't consider that announced by Spyderco personally.

Ah gotcha, didn't anticipate how official you wanted the announcement... In that case, I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere.
I guess it was just an assumption then on my part figuring if a reputable retailer is going to go as far as collecting payment info for a product, they may know a little something.

Yes, I contemplated if I should include separate options for laminated vs. solid carbon steels in the poll; however, I think the best option would be to leave that up to Spyderco.

I realize that many traditional Japanese Spyderco knives would first come out in VG10. However, there is not one traditional thing about The Introvert. It is a radical design, so why not break the mold and go with an exotic steel? My thinking is there are some people, like me, who will buy The Introvert regardless of the steel used, just because they like the design. There are many other steel junkies, though, that might jump-in if the blade steel used was something they didn't already have in their collection. In addition, since this is an expensive knife, I believe more people could justify the price tag if an expensive steel was included. I'm not taking anything away from the quality of VG10. I'm just suggesting that a radical new design might get into more hands and have a better chance of catching-on if it uses a "high-end" steel rather than vanilla/standard VG10.

As far as those that don't see this as an announced knife, Knife Center is taking orders and Blade HQ is now showing a price for the Introvert, so that's good enough for me.

Anyway, keep the votes coming. It is always interesting to see which way the forum preferences are going.

Honestly, I think vg10 is probably the right steel for this one. Like you I find the price tag a bit high and wish it were coming out at a more affordable price point. Truth is though a lower price would probably make me a buyer but a fancier steel would not.

Perhaps a bit more blunt than I'd have worded it, but yeah. Chalk this one up as one of those "I'm glad they're adventurous and make interesting and unusual knives, but this one isn't for me".

+1 Couldn't have said it better myself. :D

Besides, if Spyderco has set the MSRP for this knife, then they've already decided on a steel.

I didn't vote since I have no interest in the knife ... it just doesn't float my boat. YMMV

I love the Swick, and I really like the concept of this knife. For almost $200 it needs to have something pretty special!
