Best Bathing Suit Blade/Shark-Go-Away Spydie?

#1

Post by Sully »

Sure the odds firmly reside in the neighborhood of NEVER... but when I'm swimming in the ocean LATELY (read: visits to SC) I find myself thinking about shark attacks. I love sharks, by the way –– beautiful, stealth creatures. Still, I'd hate to meet one while swimming. And when I'm way deeper than the next hapless wandering surf addict, I'd like to have, well, something quickly at hand. Better than a desperate 'haymaker' to the nose, no?

Anyone else think this way?

Salt, obviously.

Smallest functional, shark-go-away Spyderco? It is just for a bathing suit pocket. Don't want too much blade.

Hawkbill best in a thrashing self-defense situation?

Salt Ladybug hawkbill or is there a more appropriate option?

Go for the nose? Eyes? Gills? SHORE?!!!

Since sharks generally bite you and then back off to let you bleed out, you're probably better off with a flare gun so you can signal for help ...

Was thinkin' a more MINIMALIST option, so I can discreetly carry on the beach in a wet bathing suit. I'm weird like that. :)

Did not really know about the serious thickness of shark skin, thanks mtngunr.

I think if I were going to ever use any knife in a defensive scenario, a ladybug would be one of the last ones on my list. Kind of small for that role, don't you think?

I'd probably just go with a Pacific Salt, probably even PE because I feel like serrations might slow down the stabbing action, which is your best bet since a shark's hide is pretty thick/course/tough. Assuming that you would probably be underwater, your mobility will be hindered, so the power of your strike will be compromised, I would want a knife that can pierce very efficiently so it will do the job with as little effort as possible.

What part of the shark are you planning to stab to be able to stop it? The brain? (Just trying to think here.) I do agree that shark skin is pretty tough and it would be tough to slash to disable the jaw.

Also, are we thinking that we don't see the shark coming and it has ahold of part of us first and then we are going to draw and use the knife? Or are we thinking that we manage to see the shark coming and draw and use the knife as the shark is coming at us?

Isn't the best plan to stay in groups so that the shark doesn't single us out and go after one of us?

Well I'm definitely no expert on sharks...heck I've only been in the ocean a few times and surely not around any sharks. But, my understanding is that there are basically two kinds of shark attacks...1) you don't see it coming and you're most likely a gonner, and 2) you have a chance of defending yourself, as many people have done in the past. So, if you're lucky enough to defend yourself, there have been tales of people doing so simply by punching a shark in the snout, as they're very sensitive there. But, I would imagine that ramming a 4 inch blade into a shark is going to get their attention and hopefully at least stop the attack. But again, I don't have any idea...you might still be SOL and end up as shark dinner, but in my head it seems like being underwater, you're gonna have a better chance at stabbing than at slashing simply because of the resistance that water puts on your arms.

Here's an idea....Spyderco just needs to come up with a pocket sized harpoon gun. Make it folder sized and give it a pocket clip. That solves everything :D

LOL, I'm pretty sure having a blade that shoots out... makes it pretty illegal.

You'd be better off aiming for a "Shark don't see" knife to avoid drawing their curiosity. IMHO...something with black DLC or maybe a Carbon Fiber blade like a Busse StealthHawk.

Yeah I saw that a few days ago. The poor guy looked like he just wanted to cry from relief and I wouldn't blame him one bit. He literally just escaped all but certain death. When you watch a video like that, the idea that you'd even have time to THINK about pulling a knife out and having the concentration to open it and use it is pretty unrealistic. I think if you were actually diving and were underwater and able to see the shark coming and you could then pull a knife and prepare to defend yourself, you'd have a far greater chance of effectively using a knife, but that guy could have had a Warrior strapped to his hip and I doubt he would have even though to pull it and use it.

This kind of thing is no different than any other self defense scenario, whether it's knife defense or handgun defense, you really need to train enough that you can pull the knife and use it as a reaction without thinking, otherwise you'll most likely be caught up in trying to not get eaten. I have an uncle who at one time was a black belt in Tae kwon do and I saw him get into a fight with a guy, and after so many years of taking classes and earning belts, he didn't use one single martial arts move on this guy. I asked him after the fight why, and he said when that moment hit him, everything he knew as a kid growing up on the streets defending himself came back and that was second nature to him, and it just came without any thought.

Wonder if this is not one of those "I don't need to outrun the bear, I only need to outrun YOU" situations and the "best" knife might be any small sharp Spyderco Salt that could draw blood from a fellow swimmer. ;)
