Bigger Balance?

#1

Post by paladin »

The Balance is truly a design that is a joy to use for most any light/medium duty slicing tasks...

With its Schempp-angled engineering it makes short work of blister packs, envelopes, and most importantly-- Priority Mail packages containing new Spydercos! :D :spyder: :D

Those of us who EDC them & love them know they provide a cutting experience no other model can match-- right? Ken & Ted ;) ...

Also, they seem to be coveted on the secondaries, so perhaps there's still a demand  ....

So who'd lay out some greenbacks for an up-scaled Balance 2? <this guy right here for one!>

I dream of a Balance 2 with the following upgrades:

1. Longer handle that would afford a 3 finger purchase on the handle (at least)

2. Longer blade, perhaps a little less tall (proportionally)

3. Fine jimping in choil & on thumb ramp ( I could live without it, however)

4. Larger lanyard hole to easily thread paracord thru

Things I would love to see kept the same:

1. VG10 is GREAT

2. Plain Stainless & CF versions, please...adding a G10 option probably wouldn't hurt anyone's feelings, however ;)

3. 4 way hourglass clip

4. Blade stock thickness... great balance of slicing & strength already, plus by adding a bit more length it would SEEM a bit thinner, relatively.

I'd be interested. I thought the CF model was too pricey when it came out, but might try it if they would make another run. It's a very appealing little knife, and you fans make it hard on a guy... also Darby''s pictures of it peeping over a corn leaf, etc :D

By the way this thread needs some pictures...

I would be interested. I would also love to see a CF Equilibrium.

The CF Balance is one that I missed and I regret it to this day, I keep my eyes open for one on the secondary but they just don't seem to pop up often, I wont make that mistake again if they come back around. Great photos Darby,
Happy to be part of this great forum and group of down to earth spyderco addicts, Thanks Sal and gang.

I think I recall reading that "a bigger Balance" is what was the idea behind the Equilibrium design?

IIRC, this was in a post from Mr Schempp himself...?

After owning the Balance and using the Equilibrium I think the bigger sibling works better.

Kind of like this? Image

I would grab one for sure! I don't own a Balance, and while they intrigue me, the small size has kept me from buying one.

I'd be interested.

Had my hands on a Balance for the first time last week, but, in spite of its appealing angle of attack for its purpose, thought it was just too small.

The Kukri for sure is close...but have you priced one on the secondaries? Talk about sticker shock!!!

Plus they're as rare as hen's teeth...probably accounting for the high prices, eh?

But I envision the spine being a bit more "Balance-ish" if that makes sense :o and maybe nix the plunge line and add a choil like the Balance ...but you're on to something with the Kukri comparison, thanks! :) :spyder:

Yup, you're correct sir...

And while I'm a Wharncliffe fan, I prefer a more leaf shaped blade in most tasks, plus the "negative angle" of attack was, for the most part, lost on the Equilibrium...thanks for stimulating thought :)

Yeah, Kuhkri is a favorite. I love many of the Schempp designs.
Although, I've never had the opportunity to use a Balance.
Maybe try a Los Banos Lava? It seems to be slightly larger than a Balance with more grip area. I love mine and feel it's like a mini Kuhkri. Both heavily underrated.

Saw this at GPKnives but no pic:
The Spyderco Essence, an Ed Schempp design, is also a new model in the works. The Schempp Essence offers a gentleman's mid-sized folder for those who really enjoy Schempp's unique view of function and aesthetics. Comfortable contoured G10 will form the exoskeleton of the knife while the blade will offer superior cutting performance without tiring the wrist as it features a negative angle.

So what is the essence of Ed's Spyderco designs?

Downward blade angle, a choil and maybe some bolsters? I would love to know more about this knife!

Yeah, me three. That GP description is so vague, lol.

Why is it when I hear "gentlemen" knife in a description I get disappointed? :)

Amen, Brother. I still have 3 (CF) Gifted one. One of them is with me ALWAYS. It's such a great design. (I have to thank Paul for putting me on to this little gem)

I wouldn't want to trade the little one for a larger model but, yeah, I'd be interested in adding a big brother. I hesitated on the Khukuri and regret it to this day.

Great idea. I'm very interested in this new model too, when it ships.
