Tom Krein Spyderco's
Tom Krein Spyderco's
Hi folks
I'm just learning about Tom Krein and the re-grinds that he does. Can anyone shed some light onto this subject for me? Do his Spydies carry value with collectors at all?
Thanks as ever.

Re: Tom Krein Spyderco's
Tom Krein stopped doing regrinds a while ago. I was fortunate to buy one on the secondary market, a Manix M4. I am not sure if they have any collectors value, but I value the one I have because it cuts so well. :)

I had Tom Regrind and reprofile a lot of Spydercos years ago. Here are a few pics I had handy.

I can confirm he no longer regrinds
Re: Tom Krein Spyderco's
Tom Krein did one of his last Spyderco regrinds for me on this Poliwog:
Tom will be at the Blade Show this year and on Friday will be teaching some classes. I'd say a $20 WELL SPENT!!!
FRIDAY, JUNE 5
How To Grind a Knife Blade, Tools & Safety - $20/person
•8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m.: Proper Tools and Safety Gear/Tips, with knifemakers Tom Krein and Lucas Burnley, and Chris Williams of Wilmont Grinders
How To Grind a Knife Blade Part 1, The Courtyard - $20/person
•9:45 a.m.-10:45 a.m.: How To Grind, Part I, with knifemakers Tom Krein and Lucas Burnley, and Chris Williams of Wilmont Grinders
How To Grind a Knife Blade Part 2, The Courtyard - $20/person
•11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.: How To Grind, Part II, with knifemakers Tom Krein and Lucas Burnley, and Chris Williams of Wilmont Grinders

Re: Tom Krein Spyderco's
The photo's are top notch fellas! Thank you.
Love the way the grind drops and those spine wedges are sooooo smooth!
What era was he operational?
A few of you have mentioned that he no longer does what he did, so are these soon to become relics?
I ask only because I don't know!
It might be easier to add a link to his history!

Is that bottom one a Rescue, or Atlantic? Did it start life as a Plain Edge, or was that part of the regrind? I really like it.
Going back to Caly.

Re: Tom Krein Spyderco's
The bottom one started out as a plain edge Atlantic Salt. I had Tom give it a flat grind and more of a wharny profile. It has just a hint of curve to the forward portion of the edge. I carried that knife for a couple of years! Still have it, but more or less retired it after I caught the clip on a door jam and rotated the clip causing it to tear out the FRN clip pocket.
Re: Tom Krein Spyderco's
Not to derail, but I just stumbled on this new product last night called "Bondic"... It's a UV cured polymer for repair operations... Looked really cool! I would think of trying it on this...WireEdge Roger wrote:... retired it after I caught the clip on a door jam and rotated the clip causing it to tear out the FRN clip pocket.

Re: Tom Krein Spyderco's
I always preferred the look of the original Chinook. Never was fond of the grind profile on it though. That regrind from Tom is the way it should of come in my opinion.
