PITS - bead blast, blue anodized, bead blast blue anodized!

#1

Post by Liquid Cobra »

Doing my rounds over on the British Blade Forum I found this post by Kristi! Seems Sal and co are toying with different finishes for the PITS Folder. If any one of these choices make it to production I'll be buying another PITS!

Here is the link. I hope it's ok I posted this here.

Thanks for posting. I definitely prefer the plain bead blasted finish. The PITS has an industrial look to it that goes well with a natural metallic color, IMO. I'm not really a big fan of color anodizing anyway.

Sometimes it's good for me not to have a choice. Had all three options been available I think I'd be without a PITS right now due to indecision paralysis.

"I like the polished one the most, no the blue the most, no wait, I like the bead blasted. " Start over and repeat indefinitely...

I like the knife A LOT! Glad I didn't wait! I'm happy with the polished Ti. I have a bead blasted Sage2, and a blue Centofante Memory. This is a good variation for me!

Originally I considered stone blasting my PITS but now I really like the present smooth finish. But, of the three proposed finishes, the bead blasted is most tempting.

I like the sound of blasted orange one person suggested.
Current favorite: Manix 2 with carbon fiber scales and cru-ware.

Me too. I'd love just to see what that'd look like.

This is good news! The shiny finish was a bit shiny...

I would choose the one that shows the least wear 5 years down the line. I like the worn look of bead blast ti, but not chipped and scratched anodizing.

I really like the looks of the two blue versions. Very nice. Just what the knife needed.

To be honest I think Spyderco could easily sell all 3 of these versions. The blue anodized looks good but I think I would prefer the bead blasted and blue anodized.

I believe some people who bought this knife early said that the knife had some sharp edges on the handle, will these also be beveled in the next run?

Here are Kristi and Sal's post in full from BB:

Sal asked me to post a couple of images of the PITS that we're currently considering. One has bead blasted scales, one has just blue anodized scales, and the third has bead blasted/blue anodized scales.

We're looking forward to hearing your feedback.

Make it a good day!

We're already preparing for the next run which will be in motion for late '15 delivery. the general feeling was that the shiny Ti was too, well, er, shiny. Eric and I carried the bright blue versions. They held up better than expected with daily use, but still did get some scratches. The maker felt that the bead blasted and then anodized would be stronger and not so bright. All input is appreciated.

I saw and handled the bright blue anodized verions at the IWA show and it certianly was very nice. But for this design, I'd probably prefer the bead blasted handle. To me, it would make the PITS a better 'working knife'

Definitely prefer the standard color. I like my Ti to be as close to natural color as possible.

Did the knives you handled at IWA have sharp edges on the top of the handle or had they been rounded?

I think they were the same as the one I have, with sharp edges on the inside of the handle parts.

I feel like all 3 of these should be made and the polished should be ditched....

I feel like doing all 3 is a nice touch so people that can't have locking knives have options.

Stonewashing or bead blasting would be my first preference. I especially love the stonewashed finish on the Taichung Spydies like the Domino, Southard, Techno and Slysz Bowie - I can scratch those up in my pocket with keys, etc and there's very little evidence. The bead blast ano'd one is also very attractive.

Thanks for finding this and bringing the conversation to this side of the pond LC. Cheers, Radioactive :)

So there is a difference between bead blasting and stonewashing correct? I also really enjoy the finish on the titanium scale of my Domino, maybe that could be an option.
