You and Brunze magically appear this past week and participate on these threads like you were part of this like everyone else who cotribute on these forums day in and day out. I can tell you that there are those (not just me) who are equally unimpressed.

No retracting from me. Flag away.

Me and you are rarely on the same page but bingo.

Back to the question at hand I prefer the sharpening topic to be part of general discussion. Less work for mods, more spyderco for us.

You are "retracting" your claims of a conspiracy, since even after hinting that you think it's due to Cliff generating traffic, you don't want to actually claim it.

Do you post here to impress others?

You're totally lost. Sad thing is, I know you don't believe me when I say that.

You know I continue on these discussions but I can't with you.

As has been said in another thread, the forum really has become unpleasant.

Yes, Cliff knows knives and does a service in letting us know their limits.

But he is so clearly self-centered that he will never give ground on ANY subject.

Instead he obsessively and compulsively puts up badly written walls of text that suck the oxygen right out of a thread.

Yes, I'll watch for what he has to say but, as I now think he is a narcissist, will no longer engage him with a question or a comment.

So, it matters little to me whether or not a non-shill sharpening forum is added to accommodate his obvious but off-putting expertise.

Well I know I'm late to the party but I had to do a lot of thinking on this one>> mainly because I consider myself a bit of sharpening fanatic myself and I love to learn new tricks about the skill of sharpening every chance I get. But we're here to vote on whether or not we want a "Sharpening" sub forum here on the Spyderco.com Forum. As of this time I would say it's probably not necessary nor would it enhance or improve the Forum as we currently love and enjoy it.

Idealistically I would say YES!!! immediately but after thinking it through I believe that you would have to have a lot more guys and gals who are sharpening enthusists to justify it. How many sharpening threads do we normally run at any one time on the General Discussion section of the Forum??? >> maybe two at any given time and there are what about 40 thread titles running on the front page?

There is a part of me that says YES! but realistically I don't think we have the number of fanatics to support it. IF Spyderco goes ahead with it I will support it any way I can and and contribute where I see fit but I've honestly been content with the format we have at this time. We have such a small community here compared to Bladeforums for instance>> and they have the numbers to support such a sub forum and there is such a small percentage of Spyderville citizens that are as fanatical about sharpening that only a few of us percentage wise are at this time.

I don't think we particularly need a "sharpening" subforum, but I think a "General Knife Related" subforum would be good. The main forum is called "Spyderco General Discussion", which tells me we should be discussing Spyderco and their products and history. "Off Topic" seems to be about random non-knife related subjects. This is why I think we need a forum that falls in between, one that covers knives and sharpening, but isn't necessarily about Spyderco.

Here's what I had to say in Kristi's semi-thread in the Off-Topic section:
Since this is a Spyderco run forum, they deserve to have their own area dedicated specifically to their products, which is what the Spyderco General Discussion should be, as it's described as a place to "Discuss Spyderco's products and history".

A General Knife Topics area would be great for discussing knife related subjects that don't specifically have to do with a product Spyderco has made.

You want to ask about sharpening on the 204 Sharpmaker? Post to Spyderco General Discussion.
You want to ask about sharpening on waterstones? Post to General Knife Topics.
You want to ask about sharpening your basketball skills? Post to Off Topic.

I wonder if Sal regrets starting this thread...

This sounds very reasonable to me. I think a sharpening only sub forum would be interesting but as others have mentioned not generate enough traffic. General knife related sounds like it could work and be broad enough to keep it rolling.

I won't say that I'm sorry that I started the thread, but I am disappointed that a few chose to have a war in the middle of our playground. Turns the sand box into a cat box.

I think everything just needs to move on so we all can get past this point, that is my humble opinion. :)

Being called out wasn't my favorite point in this thread I will say that I had no choice but to respond honestly or that would have made me both Hippocratic and a bold faced liar at the same time.

That said I will repeat that I am done with it, it's over in my opinion, time to move past it.

Wow, even after a not so subtle hint - the thread regarding a potential sharpening sub-forum continues to be hijacked by a VERY small and tiny fraction of forum membership who just happen to be very vocal and are looking for others to jump on their small bandwagon.

Sometimes very sharp people can have abrasive personalities (see what I did there ;) ). But what I think what some people object to most is being corrected in a way that makes them look less knowledgeable - especially when they feel that they have some expertise in the subject matter area......but when Cliff corrects someone about metallurgy, at least from what I've read of those exchanges.......it is almost always because he is correcting statements that are not supported by metallurgical science. Does he have a nice bedside manner......absolutely not......but then again, he is just about the last person that I'd want to see at my bedside

So if you are going to argue with someone who is an expert in their specialized field of study then yes, you will probably get your *** handed to you on a platter. Sorry if that is embarrassing......but another by-product of this interaction from a bystanders point of view is that I get to learn as well, especially when the misinformation that is being corrected might be something that I had previously thought to be true myself........simply because I've heard it being touted by a larger number of people who have quite a bit of experience with knives but who don't understand the metallurgical science behind why something is the way it is. You throw wood into a wood chipper and you will get quite a mess.......you throw pseudo-science at Cliff and the result also won't be pretty.......but you will learn something if you want to take that knowledge away from that interaction.

Anyways, I think that this is another thread that I won't be returning to.......I've already offered my opinion on the question posed by the thread so I'm done. If you've already offered your opinion on the question posed by the thread then anything further to that other than an honest discussion with other people's perspective on the question might just be a personal attack on another, or offering up unnecessary negativity........which is contributing to the negative tone of the forum that was brought up in another thread that also turned ugly and which I've also abandoned.

I'd suggest that everyone just let it go and move on with actively trying to be more positive. I have been too negative at times in the past myself and I think that the only upside to this discussion is to try to temper any future legitimate criticisms that I might have that are purely opinion based on taste and preference in a way that won't invite an escalating hostile response from others.

So I guess I have taken something positive away from the conversation......but I am also getting tired of seeing others personally attacked too. Sorry, but you'll have to excuse me if I don't want to be a part of this type of behavior..........
