KOT : Any Kershaw owners?

#1

Post by AllenETreat »

This is a company I like next to & SOG.

Currently I have a DWO Sabertooth (SE)

I'm gettin' the LFK in a coupla weeks

Their Ken Onion "speed safe" knives are

quite interesting too...

Anyone else own something by Kershaw?

P.S. -

Go to www.SportsmansGuide.com & look under

"cutlery" ; Gary Olen has the Scallion for

$29.97 plus shipping!

I've got a couple Leeks and a Scallion,a Talon, and I'm going to unload a Vapor on eBay soon. The Vapor is made in China, and it shows. Not terribly bad,but pretty much what you'd expect from Shopathome. The Talon rocks;it's a high-end G-10 liner lock. The Onions are neat. I much prefer Kershaw's SpeedSafe to SOG's assist because when closing the spring tension doesn't kick in until you're at the 90deg point. The smaller ones also have a flipper for really easy opening. The steel in the Onions isn't the best(440),unless you get a Random model, which is S30v.

I don't have many because most of their designs don't do much for me,but the ones I have seem to be quality products. I'd love to see a wharncliffe Leek w/S30v steel and G-10 handles.

I have a Chive that I'm yet to carry or use but its a blast to play with. Great quality, no play in any direction whatesoever. Perfect finish. Not great steel, but I'm interested in getting a Boa someday, which is S60V.

Speedsafe is simply amazing, but I'm paranoid I'd deploy it in my pocket, and if you use the safety, then it's no faster than anything else from pocket to open. It's a nice knife, but a small Spyderco is designed for adult hands, whereas a small Kershaw is, well, just too small. My 2 cents.

I have a Rainbow Leek which I carry quite a bit. The build quality is excellent and the rainbow finish is really neat looking and seems to be quite durable - makes the knife very easy to clean up after cutting up something messy like fruit.

The speed-safe is really fun to play with, but I, too, question the "safe" part a bit. I've never had the knife deploy by accident, but it does seem like a (slight) possibility if something bumped your pocket just right.

I've yet to see/handle the "Bump" model (titanium handle, S30V blade) but it does look like a nice design....

I'm still saving my "emergency fund" for the Paramillie or ATR, though!

The only Kershaw model that does/did anything for me is the Talon, and they're next to impossible to find nowadays.

Allen: the ad is the intro price. Got a PE & CE off their site for $60 ea when they first came out. Now I think they're like $90 or $100. I prefer the regular wharncliffe shape, but the reverse tanto is ok. The black finish also shows fingerprints. Can't beat the S30v,though.

Saint: I seem to remember a site that had G-10 Talons. I'll have to look around.

I have both a Chive and a Blackout. I've carried both for about a year and a half and have never had them open (both are speedsafe knifes). I like them both.

My oldest son also carries a Blackout and my #2 son carries a Vapor. They both love them.

Hello all

I have a Leek, Scallion, Avalanche, 1050, Special Agent, Black Gulch, Canyon City, DWO Sabre and a Blue Mountain! All surplus to requirements. All good knives, but I prefer Spydies so they are going to have to go.

The Kershaw Random Task folders (small & larger) are really collectible. You can still find them from time to time on EBay.

For a really neat small knife ya gotta try the Kershaw Chive. It won some sort of award a few years ago .. NEAT small knife with Ken Onion's speedsafe design.

DR .. you've got email on the address you have posted here.

Hi Allen - Since a week I carry a Kershaw Black Boron coared little Chive. It is assisted opening an has a flipper. This little gem works like a giant! The story attached is that I've gotten it directly out of Ken Onion's pocket when I asked to buy one at last weeks IWA Show. I was helping Spyderco out at the show again and went over to Kershaw to buy one of these handy little knives. After I asked if They would sell me one, Ken said "Why should I do that? I thought Oh,Oh.... there goes my chance, but then Ken coninued by saying that Spyderco has always been very good to him and therefor I schould have his personal little chive and he would throw in the pocket lint for free. Now this little knife is even more special to me.

I own several Kershaw/Onion's:
Random Leek (PE)
Leek (CE)
Vapor I (PE)
Vapor II (CE)

I like the design of the Vapors. I got both of them when I was traveling on two seperate occasions, and didn't start either trip with a knife. They're a decent bang-for-the-buck, and usually available at a Wal-Mart.

I don't have any Kershaws yet, but I will get a Boa this year. The steel on most of the Kershaw Onions does not appeal to me, but I like the 440V on the Boa and the S30V on the Bump.

The design of the handle and blade of the Boa work very well for me. I've handled the Bump, and it doesn't speak to me.

Jurphaas:
Cool story and the black Chive is quite a looker!
I don't have a Kershaw yet, but I like the Onions.
I'd be partial to a Leek myself, as the Chives are a little small for me.
And with the different coatings they are highly collectible, too ... MUST RESIST THE URGE!

I've got a Combo Edge Whirlwind here(thanks Allen), shows how my tastes have changed.

When they came out, I bought a boa... had it for about a month, and sold it. The whirlwind sits on my coffee table to be used to cut open anything downstairs(chip bags, food packages, dvd and cd wrappers)...

Looked at the small one(leek?), be a nice toy to play with, if it wasn't for the 440a steel.

Hallo Silverback - Yeah, I was really surprised when Ken pulled out his own and gave it to me. Makes for a very special knife.
Maybe you will go thru the same proces as I did. When I first got interested in knives I looked at big knives. Many Spyderco knives belong into that catagory. In time however I started looking at smaller knives with a little something extra. Something extra that made them more interesting as just BIG and powerful. Many small knives are CLEVER and powerful. For in stance the little Chive is hair popping sharp comes with a flipper and has the assisted opening feature. The Benchmade 3100 Benchmite has the levitar locking system and is a small (all legal) automatic. The Boker Gemini is a little linerlock and carries a black Ceramic blade. There are just a few of the little powerhouses I have fallen in love with lately. Even the small Spyderco knives are special in the sense that they can be had in plain or serrated models. The LBK, Jester, Dragonfly and Cricket are little BIG powerhouses in their own right. Little BIG Knives Sal calls them. Check them out and be amazed. Have a great day.

I have a Black Gulch that my brother gave to me about 13 years ago. I also have a Talon, which are great and oh-so pointy.

I had a Boa recently and it's a good knife, especially when you take out the Speed-Safe spring. It just never got any time compared to my Lil Temp and Military, so I traded it off. Good knife though, and I always loved the belly on that thing.
