The Mamba looks amazing! If it hits production, I will be buying one. Love the up-swept blade, which reminds me of favorite designs such as the Chinook and BM 860. Size and flipper deployment are great. The killer profile of the handle and the contoured machining of the CF really match up perfectly with the blade. I'm glad to see Spyderco continue to bring more high end aesthetics to some of their designs.

Mamba! Wow what a looker! It will be a massive bummer if you scratch that coating though... Hope they bring out a plain blade too.

Ion looks like the perfect office EDC, slim and thin and understated. Glad about the FFG and solid CF with nested stainless steel liners. Looks like it has the same internal stop pin design as the Southard?

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I never thought about S60V having better stain resistance than S30V. I know that S60V came out earlier than S30V. It was heat-treated to lesser Rc and was tougher and basically was replaced with S30V, probably for good reason.

The Mamba is in the same Category as the Szabo for me. Way to aggressive looking and way to big. Aesthetically it is beautiful and I am sure it is high quality but I just wouldn't carry it and if I did it might send people running for cover when deployed.

The GB2, Ion, Lil' Lum and Lil' Temp look terrific and are all easy purchases for me.

Good news, Sal mentioned a while back that he would like one in ZDP, so there's a good chance!
sal wrote:Same leaf shape blade. Steel is VG-10. Handle is black G-10 with nested liners. 4 way hourglass clip.

Certainly variations are possible if demand is there. Once we're tooled up and building, it's just a matter of capacity to make variations. I'll probably want a ZDP-189 version with BRG FRN scales.

Spyderco 2015 Production Sample – Mike Draper

#317

Post by Mr Blonde »

Like the Firefly, the Mike Draper folder has also suffered some setbacks in production. Hopefully it will come out soon this year. This prototype seemed very similar to the first one, which was shown last year. I’ll admit I’m not a fan of the handle design, with the web graphic and blue accents. It is a good representation of the makers’ custom pieces which is important to Spyderco’s choices in custom collaborations. If you like the stainless steel Police models but not the ergos and weight; I think this is the knife for you. The Mike Draper is a very light folder for its size and the handle is completely chamfered for an ergonomic grip.

Spyderco 2015 Production Prototype – Filip de Leeuw Myrtle

#318

Post by Mr Blonde »

The Myrtle was a nice big folder with a good custom ‘feel’ to it. The blade may seem a bit unusual, but it’s actually designed for the type of practical utility chores most people use a knife for; opening packages and cutting food. When I held the knife, it was very easy to imagine that the Myrtle would be a very practical design. I really liked the classic custom design with a bolster and the five screws in the handle that lined up nicely. The custom clip design is very different from the regular Spyderco hourglass clip, but in my handling of the Myrtle it seemed very comfortable to grip.

One thing that keeps coming to mind when looking at these pictures on the large screen monitor is just how great the quality and resolution the macro pictures of these knives are.

The photos were always impeccable in the past but I am also wondering if they are now at a slightly higher resolution than they were in past years due to the Forum upgrade and perhaps new software uploading capabilities. The macro details just seem to jump of the screen at you in a way that if it was there in prior years.......I guess I just wasn't appreciating quite like I am with this years pictures.

In any case, Mr. Blonde's photography of these Spyderco's are nothing short of just amazing! :)
This is always the most enjoyable thread of the year to visit. :spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :)
