anyone else having XP problems?

Post by vampyrewolf »

My comp ran fine from Nov 16 01 until Oct 20 03... since then...

Oct 20th reinstall(50% fragmented)

Dec 26th reinstall(corrupted)

Jan 17th reinstall(corrupted, wouldn't read CDs at all)

Mar 20th reinstall(shuts down on me, clean of viruses and under 1% fragmented)

In january I took it in, and got a call that night telling me what to do next time. Soon going to just leave 5gb worth of stuff in here.

Just me?

Sorry for your problems Vampyrewolf. That can be incredibly frustrating. I hope you get everything worked out soon. To answer your question, I've been using XP home for a couple of years now, and (so far) it's been the most trouble free system I've ever used. Hope that hold up.

Seems like some folks have no trouble at all with XP, and others... Well let's just say I'm not so impressed.

VW, ever try www.pcpitstop.com ??

Hello all

I have used all of the widows operating systems from 95 to XP. XP is by far the best but certainly the least forgiving if you try to use any programes it doesn't like!

One or two of my friends have gone back to ME because they find it more user friendly!

ok, still shutting down on me...

4 hrs today between factory restore and reloading programs... it wouldn't install norton, and 5min later it shut off again.

I pulled the blaster update off microsoft last night and it still did it.

Just got back from future shop and my 5yr extended warrenty may pay off. The tech I talke to figures the hard drive might be shot after just over 2yrs(nov 16th 01), and the warrenty has them replace it if it is shot.

find out in a day or so when they get to it. Last time was about an hour.

edit: might just install the xp pro disk I have sitting here, since xp home that they give me isn't working out.

I would guess hard drive or virus. There was one going around that shut the computer down when connecting by dialup. Just sometimes though.
Butt if you are getting disk errors after an install, I'd go with hard drive problems.

Some possibilities:
1. did you install XP over an older OS (like 98?) That usually doesn't work out too well. Clean installs of XP seem to work best.
2. Could be an intermittent Hardware issue. Have you fully scanned your HD for bad sectors?

Patrick

If it keeps shutting down on you, try disabling your firewall (if you are running one) and see if it still shuts down.

I was having a problem with my computer shutting down repeatedly, while using Internet Explorer. Turned out it was Norton Internet Security causing my computer to reboot when it ran into something it didn't like. I uninstalled it, switched to Zonealarm and no more shutdowns.

I had some difficulty last March when I upgraded to XP home edition from Win98SE, or at least I thought I did...if I had done what the compatability report said to do in the first place, it would have been a totally trouble free install. I just had to uninstall and reinstall my scanner and printer and update some old drivers. No problems since then...even my wife's PageMaker desktop publishing program, which constantly gave us problems in Win98, has been behaving perfectly since the upgrade to XP; no reboots or error messages any more. Turned out to be a good investment.

They say the XP is the best OS system created by MS so far and I tend to believe them. However, it's a proven fact that many people have a lot of problems with it.
