Grey Calypso Jr. - I finally gave in...

#1

Post by Jeff/1911 »

Well, I wasn't going to order one...not sure why.

But then, yesterday when my pal decided to place his order with Walter at SRC for a knife, I figured I had better go ahead and get one whilst I still can.

Lookin' forward to it!

lets see...
got my first calypso jr lt on oct 26 01, black frn, pe
got a grey from ngk's first shipment
just got a black frn, se yesterday...

my black/pe went in the trade for the ronin, as a topper. 2yrs of daily use, thinned edge(20 back, 30 edge), ended up with a satin finish blade with a line of mirror from sharpening...

Thanks fellers! I'll post once I get it into my hot little hands. Of course then I'll have to try and think of some point to address which is in some way original...considering the volumes that has been written already extolling it's many virtues.

Patrick,

I've had a couple too, a pe/frn I gave to my nephew and a serrated/frn I traded as well as a pe/micarta I also traded away.

Maybe I'll be able to hang onto this one for awhile.

Speaking of Calypsos...I just recently re-acquired a virtually new plain edge large Calypso in micarta, after trading away mine awhile back.

I suppose (for me at least) it is true to say that once you've owned one of the Calypso models, it never really leaves you. At least, it doesn't leave you for long.

Jeff.

ps - Nothing like answering your own posts over and over again to buildup the old count number and perform BTT-age, huh?

There will be no regrets.

C Jr. cuts like nobody's business, the VG-10 is sweet too and the silvery clip-it is great!

Got my grey Calypso Jr. into my hands today. It's been awhile since I owned one of these, I forgot how nice they are. In particular, this little grey beauty has an absolutely perfect lockup and flawless operation with a dynamite edge...and that silver clip - Gorgeous!

Kudos to Walter at Spoon River Cutlery - he is simply wonderful to deal with.

Calypso Jr's. cut the cheese!

Also, the meat, veggies and fruit! I have several unused black ones I'm saving, plus two each serrated and plain edge users which are my favorite EDC's, regardless of maker or price (and I've tried a lot!).

I guess I'll have to order a couple grays to round out my collection. Calypso Jr's. are the cats tail end as far as I'm concerned!

I'm not surprised you like the grey Calypso, Jeff. Mine hasn't been out of my pocket since I got it. I think the coloured FRN and sandblasted clip were all that was necessary to turn a really good knife into a truly great one. I'm wondering if the market has responded better to the grey Calypso than the original black one. I could never understand why the original knife didn't succeed, but maybe it just needed coloured scales to differentiate it from the Delica.

BTW I did carry my micarta Calypso Jr today and enjoyed using a knife with a little more heft. It occurred to me that a Calypso with scales and bolsters like the Kopa might be just about as good as it gets. Whadda ya reckon'.

cheers,
clay

Hi Clay,

Very nice to hear from you. I sure am "re-appreciating" this Calypso Jr. since receiving it a couple weeks ago. I got rid of my last frn one when I gave it to my nephew and good friend awhile back, and he carries it everyday. He really appreciates the fine design. I agree, one with bolsters and micarta would be truly wonderful I think.

Best wishes, Jeff/1911.

ps - My "lucky pouch" is always with me...it rides in my coat pocket and totes my change everywhere I go - Thanks again!

Jeff/1911,

How's the Calypso Jr holding out? It's funny to get that much quality construction and cutting ability for just $40-70USD.
