Took the M398 out on a camping trip. Man, I'm really liking this one for bushcraft. It takes such a razor edge and just keeps cutting. I think it was some of my easiest Mule feathersticks.

Spy27 Mule just showed up. I slapped some Halpern Hunter Orange scales on it, did a tab delete, and reprofiled/sharpened the edge to 18°/side. I have a couple of wethers to process this week, so will see how this steel/blade shape works.

Someone asked me to make disassembly ready scales months ago, and for cheaper than my stabilized burl, 3D contoured by hand handles. I decided to stay flat and use big chamfers. I have to do the chamfers by hand so it's still time consuming.

He loved them and asked for thicker ones (which means even bigger chamfers lol), here they are. I've used old european micarta called Celeron. Not vintage yet, but quite old already.

Picked up two of the MULE TEAM™ 2 CPM SPY27s. I put some Hunter orange scales on one and used it to skin/gut out two good sized wethers. I had modified the knife by deleting the guard/nub at the heel of the blade prior to use. The edge held up very well with no issues going through ball joints, wool, skin, etc. and there was no staining from blood, etc. I did wash the blade after use, but just did a quick wipe dry and then back into the sheath. The knife was very comfortable in the hand and the handle shape (along with Halpern Ti’s G-10 scales) made it easy to hold onto and maneuver - even inside the body cavity, which is pretty small.

The only issue I had using it in this roll (game processing/skinning) was the lack of a drop point, Yes, I understand that this is a production model and the blade shape was changed so as not to be mistaken for the limited initial run of the steel. So, I modified it to suit the task. Next step is to refinish the blade, probably 800 grit and reprofile the edge. This one will definitely go out with me on my next hunt.

I usually simply use a file with the piece I'm working one being held at 45° in a rotating vice. This time I tried to win some time by using a diamond countersink on my drill press, but this left a good amount of time file by hand to make it perfect. I'm going to fix that way of losing time sooner than later

Work in progress. Probably won’t get much more done due to a family medical emergency that popped up. I’ll finish the scales when I get back to Boston.

Not sure about the contouring. Could probably use some more. I’ll know more after some use. Unfortunately I won’t have access to my dad’s tools, so it will have to be done by hand.

Overall, it’s been fun. I now see the appeal of the Mules.

Walnut. My father is wood worker has lots of tools and know-how, which is why I do these little projects when I visit. He had this piece lying around. The other scale is not figured at all, but can't beat free. Besides, the show side looks really good in my opinion. I polished it up to 5,000 grit last night.

I love that essence, really nice ! Contouring is really subjective, I personally fond of the "coke bottle" profile, just sticks to your hand like if it was a glove :)

Ive been using it and carrying it quite a bit on the farm down here in NZ and I have to say, I really like the SPY27 steel so far. We had to put down a ewe last night and the modified tip mule was much easier inside the cavity. I can see why the originals sold so quickly.

My first mule in VG XEOS. The handle still needs more shaping. Probably will take some time as I will use, then refine, use, etc. My dad made the box for me.
