I saw a Spyderco Military with a black edge on a picture in the German weapon magazine caliber. I never saw this before. Is it customized?

welcome aboard dude! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Spyderco did made a run on coated knives. The ATS-34 Military was a fine example of black surface coat. but the black millies were discontinued due to wear on the coat. its a collector's item now! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> hope this helps.. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Welcome to <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>land.

"black edge"? So the whole blade was black or just the sharp part. Either way if it is something for sale (and you are into <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>, and who is not) you may want to get it from a collectors view.

Wow...thanks alot folks! What a friendly welcome. You are very kind!

The whole edge was black like on the picture Jeff/1911 attached.

Samo said the black Militarys were discontinued due to wear on the coat. Other military knifes also have dark edges. Would it be possible to coat the edge of a Military with a CPM(T) 440V edge?

I don't have any Spyderco yet but I'd like to buy a Military and generally I prefer black edges.

dude,

I'm sure the details of the coat was mentioned somewhere in the "Spyderco Story", I believe its black oxide coating which wears off with abrasion. Spyderco did also produce the Endura in Black.. I saw a serrated version which is pretty AWES<img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>ME! <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

If you are willing to deal with it, you could get the black Military and have the blade recoated when the black starts to wear off. I think it would be time consuming and expensive, but it is an option.

Oh yeah, some craftsman do offer aftermarket coating of blades. you can actually do your millie in black ti-ni. but any modification will void warranty.. so, look before you leap.. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Hi Ultima, Welcome.

Photos can be deceiving. Steel is black in color. The reason that it looks silver is because it has been polished to reflect light. The blade can be put into a position, when photographing, so that certain portions of the blade may not reflect light, in which case, they appear black. It would be most difficult to make and keep a black "edge" on a knife, becaused the edge is the part that is constanntly changing.

I noticed that the bob lum Tanto folder has a black blade. does it hold better then the military did? if not then why does spyderco keep doing this to there blades?? You figure they would learn from 1 mistake

They stoped doing it for a while, but the people wanted it and Syperco listens...so they only do it on the Lum model now.

ultima ratio,

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum!

I have the black blde Military. It was explained to me as a "sort of" titanium finish.

To my taste, the Military is the best folder around. While I use a Military as my every day carry (EDC), I don't generally carry my black blade due to its rarity - we are talking about one fine knife. I have noticed that the black blade does show wear rather easily.

One way or the other, you pay for your tools!
